I’ll be listening to a Motorola Type II SmartZone system (Seattle-King County Public Safety System) when suddenly the sound stops. I can still see the raw frequency (not the control channel) on the screen, but no sound is coming out of the speaker. I can switch to another channel, then right back to the previous one, and I hear sound coming from the same frequency again. At first I thought the end code was off, but then why would the frequency still show up on the screen (it would go back to the control channel, but it doesn’t). and I’ve tried fooling with the end code, and it doesn’t make a difference. It doesn’t happen everyday, but I want to know if my scanner is broken. Any ideas? Thanks!

(sry about the bad grammer on the title lol)

external speaker/headphones work ok?

On my 396....the internal speaker still works (if that's what you want to call it)
But at the loudest setting I can't hear it unless I hold the scanner/speaker to my ear and even then it's just barely..
BUT tha'ts permanent.
Anyways Headphones.Speakers work fine.

BTW; Also mine didn't start out like that..
Basically I used to keep it in my car ALL the time with an ex. Speaker Hooked up.
When I took it out one-day....I found the problem described above.

FWIW, my `396 acts in a similar fashion but only when it's been connected to the cigarette lighter power adapter for more than about 10-15 minutes. The audio starts out normally but eventually starts to clip like one of the priority functions is enabled (none of them are) and then eventually the audiio goes away completely even though you can see by the display that the scanning has stopped on an active channel. It does this in while in conventional or trunking. If I unplug the power plug from the radio then the audio is back to normal.

Your adapter isn't providing a properly regulated 6 volts.

On a similar vein, my 396T's (firmware version 1.13.17, using the supplied wall wart) internal speaker quit. The external speaker/earpiece works like a charm, but connecting an external speaker is a bit "clumsy", especially whiie mobile (afoot).

Is there a keypad fix, or will it have to go back to Uniden for "tweaking"?

I just noticed that this particular radio's rechargable (original) batteries get hot when the radio is on and using the wall wart power supply. Could this have caused an overheating problem which caused the speaker to fail? I wonder about this because another 396 (earlier version) and a 330 do not have this heating problem.
