• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Sorry friend but no, you can't. Each uses their own software. The most recent software for the HT is DOS based while the MTS is Windows based in its most recent release.

I don't have the HT software but when i bought the MTS software from Motorola about 8 months ago it was ~$280

They do use the same programming hardware which is helpful

Is the MTS2000 software Windows 95,98 or XP based? The DOS app that I have is R06.00.00 and it programs MT2000, MTX8000, MTx9000 and MTS2000 is this the same app you bought from moto? If so can I run and program with it under windows XP or 98?

Motorola DOS software MUST be run under DOS. Period.

So even though the R6 software was released in 1997 it cant be run under windows 98?

No. DOS software MUST be run under DOS, and DOS only. I can't emphasize that enough. You're welcome to try it, but you will find out why we say it has to be real DOS.

David, I would warn you from playing with these radios as you are not comprehending the issues involved in the operations of these. You need and old computer, with a serial port, a rib, a cable, the RSS, and a pure version of DOS. I personally use an old 486 laptop for my programming needs. No USB, no Pentium, No flash drives etc... If you are not willing to go through all of this, motorola isn't going to work for you. I don't mean to be disrespectful, just don't want to see you waste any money when you make a radio into a brick.

The Jedi series do not need a 486 like the sabers/genesis series does, I use a PII 366mhz that usually runs win2k. I have a boot disk that goes into DOS, then run the HT1000 RSS just fine.

If the OP can get a newer version of the software, MTS2000 CPS runs under windows (although I do not remember if there was a firmware cut off for what MTS2000s work with CPS).

Grog,
I think the cut-off was the pre-toolproof firmware. Any radio that was pre-toolproofable would not work under Windows CPS.

So would you make a bootable DOS flashdrive or something and go from there?
David

It may or may not work. I have a current model laptop set up with dual boot. I boot to DOS 6.22, and it works on *SOME* RSS versions. Some of the guys I work with keep all their RSS stuff on a flash drive along with DOS, and boot off of that. But again, not all software will work. A lot depends on the hardware, too. It can be pretty hit and miss what works, and what doesn't. A version that works on a Dell laptop through a flash drive may not work on an HP laptop. The only sure way to be successful is through an older computer. I might add that on ALL of these laptops, we're running either Mo'Slo or Slowdown, programs that slow the CPU down drastically. Slowdown appears to be more effective with a wider range of RSS that it works on.

Here's what I did: I went to a thrift store, and purchased an old Toshiba 486 laptop. It cost me $25. I installed DOS on it, and all of my DOS RSS programs. I don't have a huge amount of money invested in it, but it works great with no weirdness at all.

This is precisely why I tend to frown upon people running out and buying Motorola radios. They're great when they work, but they're a pain in the butt to program. Unless you're prepared to deal with the hassle of setting up a dedicated programming computer, you're in for a rude awakening if you don't listen to all the advice given out here.

I figured it was somewhere around there, but my memory on the MTS specific stuff is limited with old age

I would like to clarify a few things about the HT1000 and the old MTSX software. They run just perfectly fine under Win98 DOS. I do it constantly and that is exactly how the computers were/are set up at the depot. (I know, I set them up) As for programming that MTS, depending on what version software was last used to read the radio you could perhaps get away with using some of the DOS versions out there. Otherwise you are stuck with the windows version which officiall works on 2k and above (more of a NTFS file structure issue than OS issue). However I've installed the software on a 98 machine and had it work, not that I'd recomend it, just I've done it.
