To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Yeah, that is the one. The radio is actually a fellow GMRS'er that tried to program it and he gave me the CD, cable & radio with a ERROR_2 message in the display. I was able to clear it back to ---CH01---, but nothing else. I didn't find the drivers on the CD for the cable.

I have the same problem. I'm using 2.01 of the CE86 on a vx-354 with a USB cable on XP. I've tried this on 2 different computers and I keep getting a Hardware Mismatch error. Eventually the radios will display ERROR_2 and I can't get them unlocked after that. Any suggestions on getting them to work?

Thanks.

When you turn the radio on during programming, make sure you turn the volume all the way up or programming will fail every time. This causes the Error_2. You should be able to just rewrite with the same codeplug.

Ce-86 vista prolific usb to serial com cure all

Okay so I purchased the CE-86 software for my Vertex VX-351, I am a FF/EMT and use it on the two departments I work on. After purchasing the software it wouldn't work on any of my laptops *2 running vista, 1 running windows 7. SO i tried it on my PC with XP SP2, I kept getting a cable issues. Finally at work one day I messed with the program on my VISTA laptop for 4 hours. This should fix your VISTA issues. The USB to serial com is not compatible with VISTA and the drivers they give you don't work so, I did a hardcore search and found these. VISTA will also only work with CE-86 version 2.0 & above, for a link to that software you will have to send me a message.

drivers:

http://www.cooldrives.com/lib/cooldrives/vista-prolific-chip-driver-for-serial-adapters.zip

before you install this do these actions:

Unplug your Prolific USB to Serial Com cable
Open up Computer
On the top left in the search bar type in "Prolific"
Select and Delete everything that says Prolific or PL 2303

After that is completed do these steps:

Right-Click on Computer
Click on Properties
Click on Device Manager
Click in Com Ports (Com & LPT1) depending on what model you have
If you see the Prolific USB to Serial Com Cable right click and uninstall it
After this has completed reboot your computer.

Now install the VISTA drivers shown above,
plug in your cable
go back into the device manager and it should now be installed just fine.
Right Click on Prolific USB to Serial Com unless it already says Com 1
Click Properties
Click the Second Tab *I forgot the name at this moment and time*
Click Advanced
Now change the Com Port to Com 1
Click Ok
Close out of all that
Next open your CE-86 Software
Plug in your radio but leave it off
Click on New
Click On File
Click Configure
Change it to Com1 *it defaults at come one so you shouldn't have to change it, if the COM PORT is blank you didn't click on NEW
Click on Upload either under Radio or just the little button, when prompted turn your radio on. you should be full functioning...I hope this solves everyone's problems.

materials you need...

1st. make sure that software is original not a demo.
2nd. use an old laptop or computer. (im using a compact laptop running on win/2000) you can find some on ebay for 30-60 bucks.
3rd. orginal cable is perffered but the aftermaket is okay.

----------------------------------------------------------
setting up the radio.........
1st. make sure the battery is fully charged! its a must!
2nd. make sure the cable is in tight and in the right comport.
3rd. turn your radio and the screen should display. ---.------
4th. closed the radio and go to the top of the window where it says radio and click upload.
5th follow the on screen insturtions and when it says the turn the radio on turn the volume all the way up! this is important! or you'll get an ERROR_2 message and the dealer is the only one that could fix it.
then the screen will display "PC CLONE" leave it open throughout the programming.
6th. make sure you enter all the proper frequencies, and the set N for narrow freqs and W for wide freqs.
7th. do NOT enter transimt frequencies for public safety or other freqs that you not athorized to TX on!
Public safety system can sting you radio and kill it. which would make it a brick.
8th. Click upload and click okay when it finishes uploading.
9. close your radio and disconnect it from the cable.

hope this works well for you!
work at your own risk! many dealers charge $1-$2 per a channel. so if your not fimilar with the software or radio let a dealer do it for you.

CE86, Windows 7, and PL-2303 USB to Serial Cable

Alright I have a fix for any of us using CE86, Windows 7, and the PL-2303 USB to Serial Cable.

1. CE86 Version 1 for XP works on Windows 7 64 bit (that is what I am using), CE 86 Version 2 is only for vista and I tried to install it on Windows 7 and it did not work.
2. If you use the drivers in this link to the Windows Vista drivers for Prolific PL-2303 (not what comes with the cable I had to search high and low for this)
http://www.cooldrives.com/lib/cooldrives/vista-prolific-chip-driver-for-serial-adapters.zip
3. You should have no problems at all, it took me less than 10 minutes to reprogram my radio with 2-Tones and all.

Using CE 86 Version 1 on XP

The following procedure worked for me. Regarding volume control, I found that setting the volume 'low' worked best:

Go into the Device Manager from System Properties.
Right Click on Prolific USB to Serial Com unless it already says Com 1
Click Properties
Click the Port Settings tab
Click Advanced
Now change the Com Port to Com 1
Click OK
Close out and exit System Properties
Next open your CE-86 Software
Plug in your radio but leave it off
Click on New
Click On File
Click Configure
Set to Com 1
Click on Upload to view what is programmed in the radio
Click on Download to program the radio

i had the same error 2 and error on radio. About drove me crazy, but i figured out that you can only use a vista computer, not xp as someone else stated. Does the volume thing really work? using volume 2.01 i believe.

Yes it works on Vertex 351s and 354s. That is what I use.

Hello.

For GMRS, there are plenty of "mirror" images you can get, all of the GMRS profiles are there.
Once the "open"version is loaded, the radio can be programmed without any special software, but it will require a serial to computer connection.
Vertex has been very "open" about how their radios work in the past, this has changed somewhat with Motorola.
Enjoy!
