Two suggestions:

1. If you are using the short 3" adapter cable that comes with the RadioShack cable, remove that adapter and plug the Stereo connector into the scanner. The PRO-197 requires the stereo connector and will not work with the adapter.

2. Verify that you are using the correct COM port to connect to the scanner. The port can be determined by looking in the Ports profile in the device manager on your machine.

Depends on your OS. If it is Windows7, windows will find it for you. But, you might have to go to the configuration menu in the software to enter the comport there. Make sure you download what you put into the scanner to the software, or you will lose what you programmed. Also, make sure that you have the latest drivers for the cable.

Follow the link in Mikey60's signature above, and download PSREdit500 and give it a try. It's got a 30 day trial period so you can check it out fully. I use it to program my Pro-106, which is the handheld version of the Pro-197, and it works great!

I'm sure it will work, but it may not automatically find the correct port. I'm not familiar enough with that program to know if it has a method of finding the port or not.

I know that WIN500 and PSREdit500 have direct access methods to access the cable, so you don't need to know the port. I don't know about any of the others.
