I've never known PSP to actually have a numbering system other than "1" being the barracks commander.

Did you see the 500 on a vehicle or on the radio? On the radio could possibly be a roster number or a badge number for an off-duty trooper. Just a guess though.

If I recall the 500 unit is the Criminal Investigation Unit

Correct. Forensic services units for each troop use the 500 ID. If I recall correctly, they're based out of the troop HQ station and cover the entire troop area from that station.

In some areas of the state, they used do drive minivans with PSP logos and a big, silly, pink fingerprint emblem on the door. Now, I think they drive full size vans:

Yes, I too, miss the state agencies including PSP and PennDOT, I spent many winter nights listening to the scanner to get the heads up for any crashes or calls my Fire Company would've ran.

I live in the Selinsgrove area. The Letter and Numbers on the cruisers represent the location and car number. On the roof (in selinsgrove) is F7 (Troop F; Barracks 7), on the trunk is, for example, 7 (car 7).

so, F7;7 is Troop F, barracks 7, car 7.

hope this helps
