PSR-300 I forgot how

In trying to bring back to life with new computer I am stuck......using Radio Shack 047 cable with stereo plug and com port set to what is shown in device manager I cannot read PSR 300
comes up with "timed out waiting for header" and it does it almost imediately.............
any suggestions.

If the radio is not powered up that will be the message you get. Be sure that the cable is fully seated in the PC/IF jack.

Yes. Is it in the PC/IF jack and not the head phone jack?

thanks for replies..........yes it is in the pc/if jack with the 3 pin plug.(it wasn't 1st time around)..when I plug into PSR300 it comes up in the clone mode....when I try to read it gives me that error message I listed before but then it also starts cloning on screen to I don't know where....................................
when I put in the disc with drivers fro RS it does not come up as they say...ie pick drivers inf file.............it list the various windows op systems as file and in those thet don't list drivers either "not that I can tell".....oh well I am going to continue

I would like to ask one of you who has this same scanner and adapter if when you plug into side of scanner when it is on does it switch to clone mode ???.................mine does and I have the sense that it should not.............I may have screwed up the input to the RS converter.............

Marty,

Yes, the PSR-300 will immediately switch to clone mode when the cable is plugged into the PC/IF port. What software are you using to try to download the information from the scanner?

I am using WIN97 which is what I used to program it with originally and the same Radio Shack adaptor.
Software comes up and I use configure to tell it that the RS adapter is on COM12......As soon as I tell it to download from scanner it says initializing and then tells me it timed out waiting or header.......Had a little problem last year when I programmed it but it was just me learning how to do it.........now I am stumped.

You could try updating the cable drivers and see if that helps.

The latest version of those drivers are available at http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM20814_Setup.exe

Have you tried clicking on the upload to 163/164 300/400 in the drop down box? If you click on upload to scanner, it looks for a Pro-97. Does Device Manager show that cable on port 12? I've done this without thinking

Speaking of which, what version of Firmware do you have on the PSR-300? You can find out by pressing the number 3 key while the welcome message is displayed. Latest uP Version is 1.8.

lets see-- if I hit #3 on turn on it comes up with version 61.00 ???

I don't dare attempt a write without being able to read the scanner.............the program is empty so I want to download and start a new database and save existing..........

I may try new download WIN97 and reconfigure.............

That version number doesn't look right. It should be something like F1.0 or U1.x

Did you wait until the welcome screen was displayed to press the #3?

The reason I ask, is around firmware version U1.4 the PSR-300 firmware was changed to make it clone compatible with the Radio Shack PRO-164/PRO-163 models. If your firmware is older than that, there may be an issue there, although WIN97 should be able to read the data either way.

Thanks for all the help.......

I went to the GRE sight and downloaded the firmware update I was G1.00 and the current is G1.08

Uploaded OK using my RS cable which means at least the transmit side works............still no scanner download............I am relly beginning to think the receive side of adapter (radio side) has a problem....
trying to find a away to confirm......

RS has them on sale for $16.97 right now but it seems a shame if thats not it...........

Tried ohm meter readings sleev to ring sleeve to tip and same with polarity reversed................nothing obvious like an open or short.......

I bet you are all tired of this................new scenario.....I did an upload from the menu that showed both P97? & the GRE PSR-300...............low and behold cable worked but it also dumped all my info but not the preprogrammed search info so not all is lost ...................stiil problems SO

I then downloaded PSREdit300 and installed.went in fine and I can now write to my radio with my RS adapter...............as a side not it did not ask for COM port............took care of it in program.........

Something apparently amiss win WIN97 even after I reinstalled it...............

Program seems to be OK but there is not much of a help file that I can find...........
