Well, i'm off to Universal radio tomorrow to get my PSR-300, I like some of the features but the 500 looks better but, the money for the 500 isn't their.

I'm looking to use 2 antennas for my scanner because I have them already, how do I do this? do I run a splitter? or is there something else I need? or would it be better just to buy another all band antenna? i'll mainly be listening to UHF-VHF and 800mhz.

I believe the Radio Shack USB Cable and the GRE usb cable are the same. Perhaps someone that has both can confirm this.

I use my radioshack programming cable on my PSR-300,... It's the same.. I donwloaded the driver for the cable from the greamerica.com website though, so that may be necessary, but probably not..

Posted earlier by Don Starr: . . . the PSR-300 seems to want the USB cable. You can get it from either GRE or RadioShack (20-047). They're the same cable - the only difference is that GRE's is blue while RadioShack's is orange.

What software did you download from GRE? There't nothing on their site for programming the PSR-300.

At the moment, the only option is to download Win97 from www.starrsoft.com to program the radio.

To answer one question that was posed, yes the Radio Shack USB and the GRE USB cables are the same. So you downloaded and installed the USB driver for your programming cable. Have you downloaded Win97 to actually import data into your scanner? Plugging the cable into the scanner will do you no good if you don't have programming software operating. The cable only allows you to interface the scanner to the programming software. Win97 was originally created to program the Pro-97 and Pro-2055 scanners, but was recently upgraded to work with the PSR-300 and PSR-400. It is a free trial program for 30 days, then you must license it to continue using it. You can download Win97 at the below link if you haven't already:

Clarify a little better what steps you have or have not taken That is the best way to get a useful response.

I downloaded the software from the disk and as well from the GRE site. I called GRE also and they couldn't give me a straight answer either. Yes I loaded the software and plugged it in like the directions stated, all I get is "no response remove cable" thats all I get.

My next task was to program in Columbus public safety trunking freqs, Its scanning the frequencies like regular frequencies not a trunked system, because I get the data noise from the control channels. i'm not paying for anymore stuff to get this thing working, i've probably spent too much already.

thanks to everyone that HAS responded to the post, and yes i've ripped out half my hair on this stupid scanner. :D

BTW: I got the cables and software from radio shack, I was told it would work on my scanner.

As for the antenna you can try the RS 800MHz antenna. It works well for 800, UHf, and good on VHF.

There's your problem, they probably sold you the wrong cable, and as for software, I didn't think they sold any programming software.

The proper cable is either blue (the USB GRE cable) or red (the Radio Shack branded cable).
Use the Starrsoft software, and the proper cable. Make sure the computer sees the cable, or else you'll never get it to work. The cable must be assigned a COM port under Windows Device Manager.
