It seems that I frequently miss the beginning of some radio transmissions. I can hear the end of a short officer response and the dispatcher acknowledges so I don't think that they are speaking before pressing the mike key. This seems to happen most with conventional objects (I monitor Dallas PD) where I have the modulation and associated subtone identified. Is there any expert setting that I can tweak to see if I can correct this problem?

Thanks,

Rick

It sounds like you are scanning too many things. Have you tweaked any of the expert settings already?

I'm getting this clipping while I am on the same object, either within the delay timeout value or if I have the scanner paused on the object. The radio isn't timing out then scanning through the list of objects again and I happen to pick up the continued transmission.

Nothing has been tweaked (other than reception values equating to the number of bars to show when receiving a signal.)

Turn the tone search on... It forces the radio to not look for digital and will open up the audio right away, even if you don't care about the PL tone.

That occurred to me but his OP says that he has identified the tone. I assume he put it in so there shouldn't be any delay for digital.

I don't scan digital, but even when I hold on one frequency I miss traffic because most people who use the radios do not wait a few seconds for the repeaters to open up before talking. Since the system I monitor is Simulcast, the delay is pretty long. The dispatchers don't notice the miss in conversation because they are directly connected to the repeater, they hear everything. Not sure if your in a high location, but the only way Ive found around this issue is to put in the repeater input frequency, when units are close I hear the whole conversation.

Maybe the tone isn't perfect, maybe the scanner waits too long to decode, etc? Try the search instead and see.

I'll have to try and put the channel back on search. It's a bit counter intuitive but I understand the thinking behind it.

The minimum unmute delay for analog conventional channels is when Sq Mode is set to CTCSS or DCS and CTCSS Hz or DCS Code is set to Search:
  • Sq Mode = None or Search: scanner first tries for digital (default time 600ms), then decides it's analog and unmutes audio.
  • Sq Mode = CTCSS or DCS, with a tone/code programmed: scanner presumes it's analog (doesn't try for digital), but must decode the programmed tone/code before unmuting audio
  • Sq Mode = CTCSS or DCS, with no tone/code programmed ('search'): scanner presumes it's analog (doesn't try for digital), unmutes audio immediately, then displays any decoded tone/code.

Thanks Don. I'm guessing that since you didn't include an expert setting that can be modified to "unsquelch" the radio quicker when looking for a tone that the setting doesn't exist?

@ske1eter did you look at: Easier to Read Pro-106/197/PSR500/600 Digital Scanner Manual ?
