Occasionally when receiving conventional channels I get an "S" indicator on the bottom line to the immediate left of the lightning bolt. I know it's trying to tell me something, but I'm not getting it. I'll probably kick myself when I find out;>)

That S stands for Signal and indicates the scanner is receiving something. Don't kick yourself. I'm just figuring this thing out too.

Interesting. I thought that was the purpose of the lightning bolt. And the "s" only pops up on some channels and not others. I suspect it's related to signal, but perhaps saying something more?
Thanks

The S indicates the radio is in tone search mode. The lightning bolt indicates there's a tone being received. You can press the ENT key to store the tone.

Are you able to pick up Tampa on your 500 consistently? Not to hijack the thread but the original subject seemed to have been dealt with.

Only the conventional frequencies like Tampa FR and cabs especially at night. I am able to hear Tampa PD only when there is substantial ducting going on and then mostly at night. I used to be able to hear Tampa PD every night and some channels during the day before they abandoned their conventional system for the Hillsborough EDACS system.

Yes, it's the same situation here in reverse. On a good nite I've picked up Citrus Co but not often. Hernando is hit and miss, but I've had good luck with Sumter at night. Using the Radio Shack 800 MHZ with the 500/396XT.
