I just got my new PSR-500 today, and it's pre-programmed for police, fire, and ems in my county. I have a wide variety of analog frequencies i want to program, but i'm getting a little lost in the manual. Can anybody simplify it a little for me? This is my first digital scanner, and i'm getting confused somewhere along the line. I should also mention that i want to program these in manually. Thanks.

Best advice is to use programming software for these digital scanners. It is money well spent.

Is there any ONE or TWO areas you have questions on? kinda hard to go thru a "simplified" approach via this forum, and esp with fact that the scanner can do so much. I have botha 500 and 600, and can enter both conventional and trunked systems by reading the instructions and a few trial and error keystrokes too. Conventional frequencies are easiest, and there is nothing in the instructions which strike me as especially unclear on that score.

Mac, Win7, Vista, XP? Did you select the com port in arc500? Open device manager and plug in your cable do you see it come up in the usb devices or when you plug it in is their a red ? mark on one of the usb devices? Do you have a premium subscription to RR so you can use the Database?

Here is the driver installation guide: http://s.radioreference.com/rs_20546_manual.pdf , Plug the cable in after you installed the driver.
ARC500 help at ARC500 User Guide - The RadioReference Wiki .

The driver is showing that it is installed, and is listed as 2.2.4.0 Is this a valid and up to date driver?? The ARC500 program keeps telling me there is a "Communication error 8005, check USB port selection" I have done this several times and keep getting this error. Is this a driver problem, or is it the ARC500 software. I purchased the downloadable version last night from Scannermaster. I went through all of the steps, including product registration. The software opens, but will do nothing. What should i do next? Also, i am a little unclear in regard to exactly when i need to hook the scanner to the usb cable, and if the scanner should be off or on during this process. I do not have the premium membership at RR. I am attempting to use the software to download what i have programmed into the scanner, and also create frequency lists to upload into the scanner. I've spent over $600 thus far between the scanner, accessories, and software, and i need the software to work in order to get the most i can from the scanner, and i'm anxiously awaiting further input.

In the ARC500 communications window press the 'Open Windows Device Manager' and check the port number assigned to the USB cable. Then select that usb/com port number in ARC500.

Okay.....I seemed to have gotten the program up and running, and i've been poking around in it so i've got a pretty good understanding of it at this point. Now i have tried to upload frequencies to my scanner, and it says it's uploading but when i check the scanner they aren't showing. Am i missing something here? BTW, i've also become a RR premium subscriber and the import feature is awesome. Thanks to Butelsoftware and everyone else for their assistance on this.

Okay, through either perseverance or dumb luck i got it to work. I wasn't doing the "save as" for the files. What's happening now is that the computer is not recognizing the com port for the USB consistently. I managed to get some programming in, and it lost the connection again when i went to upload the last file i was working on. The USB was assigned to com port 7, my options being either 3 or 7, but when i went to upload the file to the scanner, it only recognizes #3. Is this an issue with the driver install, the ARC500 program, or the computer?? Thanks again.

So Far Away....
try upoading the file to the V-Folders,

i find the upload is faster-less time for an error writing to the eprom..

then just F-Program,,select the file,load it..reboot,,scan!!

If com7 is assigned to the cable but does not show up in ARC500 then try reboot of the PC first. Also you can not run ARC500 Virtual Control and upload data at the same time.
Also comport numbers may change when you plug the cable in a different USB port. Just leave the cable plugged in the same USB port then the port number will not change.

I was actually running the virtual control while trying to upload, not knowing this. As soon as i stopped it, i have had no more issues. I am slowly learning my way around the software, and through trial and error, and reading more into the manuals for the software and the scanner, i'm getting the hang of it. Thanks to all who helped me out with this. I'm looking forward to learning all that this scanner and software has to offer. This is a great website and i appreciate everyone's input.
