Just got the unit and looking forward to messing with the settings, so long as I don't do something wrong.

What settings / thresholds (preferably through the software) would I tweak if I wanted to test what this thing could pull in as far as the digital system I monitor (Starcom21 Statewide Illinois)?

Likewise, is there anything else that could be adjusted to increase overall performance with signal, besides the antenna?

Any thoughts, ideas or experience will be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Jake

Let us know what you think of it, but I suspect you won't need to change a thing beyond the antenna as you mentioned for StarCom21.

@ Roninjoliet - Nothing needs to be done besides selecting the system. I didn't need to plug in the custom tables, as this is already done for you. They are right, though you have to do this with my Pro 106, the end-user doesn't need to know anything in order to listen to what they want. I'm afraid the radio might make me stupid (forgive the lack of a better word).

@DaveIN - Yes, I haven't used the supplied antenna. I have a old telescoping antenna with some sort of black conductor in the middle. Had it for years and forgot where I even got it from. StarCom comes in just as good as my Pro 106, on both the Morris/Grundy site and the Will County Simulcast site.

@Iowaguy1603 - I have browsed that post numerous times. Yes, there are a few settings you can tinker with however, I don't see the EXACT setting that can be messed with to "pull in the distant sites" that is explained. Do you know what setting (its name in the software) they are discussing?

Overall I really like the radio. I'm not sure why anyone would want a bigger memory card as it truely does handle the memory well. I have my scanlists set up by county. I have almost every county in northern Illinois, from Livingston County on up, programmed and I still have about 1.86GB out of the 2GB left..... Plus I have been recording every Morris TX since I have had it. It is more sensitive then my Pro 106, in that I can pull in Joliet Fire freqs clearly here in Morris, where those freqs where non existant with my Pro-106....... Great radio but like I said earlier, using it makes me feel lazy and I don't want to forget the roots of scanning, which with this radio, could happen easily. Not much to complain about here! Thanks for the responses!

Im not too good when it comes to computers, i only have used Win96 software which is very simple hooking up the scanner to program , i have programmed most all my scanners by hand because of limited knowledge in the computer world, do you think a old guy like me could master the PSR800 with out heavy reliance on the software??...No problem programming my GRE500/197 and Uniden products by hand but cannot upgrade them....

With what you have said I firmly believe this radio would be tailored to you. You don't NEED to hook it up to a CPU at all.

Before I got the radio, I went to the GRECOM website and downloaded the software that comes with the radio. I messed with it quite a bit and had everything set up before I even had the radio. Its about as easy as setting everything up and hitting send. I would download the software if I were you and see what you think. I bet you will be surprised! You can obtain it by going here: PSR-800 Software Utility Manager - Powered By Kayako SupportSuite
Let me know what you do, if anything and your thoughts about it all.

Well, I don't claim to know it all but I will definately help out where I can with any questions you might have. Spend a little time with the software, you aren't doing anything with a radio so changing this or doing that won't matter anyway. Get your hands dirty!!! LOL

Hummmmmmm. The file that is downloaded is a ZIP file. Right click the file in the folder and see if there is a option to unzip it. If not you will need to delete the download all together then download winzip, install winzip which will allow you to "uncompress" the file, then "re-download" the GRECOM file. From that point you should be able to RIGHT CLICK the downloaded file, "unzip" it which will in turn allow you to install it on your computer.

Winzip is free and you will be able to obtain it here: Download WinZip®

Hope this helps.......

WOW RON!!!!!! I'm not sure why you are having the issues you are having! I didn't have any issues with the download or the installation of this software. I am living proof that this software download is safe and will not "harm' your computer......

Unfortunately, without being in front of your computer for this issue, I can't answer the question as to why this is happening but can say that if you proceed, you shouldn't have any issues.

Ron, that sounds like a virus checking software message. Are you positive it's a message from the GRE software?

My son in law who is a computer guru says its Windows 7 saying you have to place the software somewhere either on "desktop or etc....The first download somehow never made it, this one made it and was unzipped, i don't know what im doing so i used "extract all" to unzip it, maybe that was wrong...I can do anything to these scanners by hand but im really stupid with a computer and software...Thanks for any help....

Never depend on windows explorer to unzip files. It has a well documented bug that tends to corrupt files. Always use one of the many utilities out there, such as WinZip, WinRAR, 7-Zip (which is freeware), and I'm sure there are several others.

best regards..Mike
