WESTMINSTER - A police chase for a man suspected of shooting at two cars ended Sunday morning when police say the suspect shot himself in the head.

The chase started just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning when Westminster Police responded to a report that shots were fired at 104th and Sheridan Boulevard.

A woman told police a person in a white Dodge pickup truck with Texas plates shot at and hit two cars, including hers.

Officers say they checked the cars which had been shot and the condition of the drivers. Neither driver was injured, police say. Police then searched the area for the suspect.

At just after 3 a.m. an officer pulled behind a vehicle which matched the description at 112th and Sheridan Boulevard.

Police say they tried to pull the vehicle over, but it sped away and drove across an open-space in an attempt to flee.

Authorities say they chased the truck through Broomfield and back into Westminster.

As the suspect was driving southbound on Harlan Street, officers say they used stop-sticks - a controlled tire deflation device - at the Highway 36 overpass.

The suspect drove over the stop-sticks and subsequently slowed to 35 miles per hour, police say.

According to authorities, the suspect hit a light-pole in the 9100 block of Harlan St., and then while driving over a curb, lost a tire and drove onto an embankment.

Police say they immobilized the truck as it tried to back up by blocking it with a patrol car.

As police tried to stop the suspect, he pointed a handgun at them, but then put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, authorities say.

Police say they called Westminster Fire Rescue immediately, however, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No citizens were hurt during the pursuit, officers say.

The truck the suspect was driving had been stolen in Westminster on October 23, and was displaying license plates which did not belong to the vehicle, authorities say.

The suspect's name and information was not immediately released, pending notification of his family.

Police say they are investigating the motive in this incident, but at this time say it appears to be random.
