WS1040: Questions on how to work my Hand held Scanner!

I just bought a WS1040. I became a Premium member on Radio Reference. I then bought the software PSREdit500. I have uploaded my channels from Radio Reference to PSREdit500. I then upload it to my WS1040. But when I scan the channels nothing happens and it just keeps scanning. It has a G on the top as its scanning. Is there anyone that can explain to me what I'm doing wrong I'm new to this. TIA

We have several videos on programming the 1040 linked here

And for help with PSREdit500, select the link on this page

You should see a "T" at the top of the display if you are receiving the MPSCS statewide trunked system. Please attach your PSREdit500 programming file so we can take a look at it. You will need to zip the file to be able to attach it. Click on Attach files and open the zipped file.

The pro 106 and this scanner should operate identically.
The thing about mpscs is that it's a statewide system. Multiple counties are going to simulcast on top of each other on the same frequencies which ultimately means you have to use wild card every single time and then store the trunked radio ID afterwards. I had to do this on my pro 106 until Kent went encrypted.

Thanks! If you attach your PSREdit500 programming file, we can take a look at it to check for programming errors. Refer to post #4 for instructions.
How do i attach the file? sorry im all new to this.

Save the file you uploaded to the scanner to program it. In the File Explorer, find the file and right click on it. Click on Compress to Zip file. Click on Attach files and open the zipped file.

Three counties away from me.

You have just a conglomeration of frequencies around the county and other counties frequencies - ONLY.

Nothing under Trunked is where Montcalm 911. They page out fire still on 151.415

Make sure in software, I also use PSR Edit500 that you selected for 'Import data from radioreference - Trunked data'
Stanton tower - ONLY for Montcalm county.

Then look here to find the talkgroup #'s for Montcalm about 3/4 down, under DEC column.
Under MODE if it’s D or T it’s in the clear, De or Te sometimes clear, sometimes encrypted, DE or TE is always encrypted.
You have three listed as encrypted for Montcalm. Don't put any listed as DE in otherwise you'll hear just encrypted noise.

Importing conventional - analog, look here Montcalm County, Michigan (MI) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference
The prisons if you wanted is here Department of Corrections (DOC) (Michigan) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

Other suggestion is to put Montcalm in scanlist(aka bank) #1, clare in 2, gratiot in 3 etc. So you can turn on-off counties as you want.

Is it suppose to have a "G" at the top while scanning?

As the "Doc" pointed out in post #2 above....
The "G" means that Global Attenuation is off.

When you see the G in the display by itself, it indicates that the Global mode for attenuation is in effect, and all attenuation is turned off globally... there is no attenuation of any signal being received by the scanner (this will override any individual attenuation settings).

When the G is in the display and you press ATT you'll see GA in the display. That indicates that the Global mode for attenuation is in effect, and attenuation is now turned on.... to attenuate (or reduce) the signal strength by 20dB for all signals that the scanner is receiving (this will override any individual attenuation settings). To turn off all attenuation while in the Global mode, press ATT to return to just the G

You can also attenuate individual signals while not in the Global mode.

To exit the Global mode, press FUNC + ATT. The G (or GA) is now absent from the display. At this point, you can choose to turn on attenuation for individual conventional channels, or trunked systems by pressing just the ATT key when holding on that item. Now, just those items and no others will be attenuated. When stopped on one of those items, just the A will show in the display.

If you have individual items set for attenuation and then press FUNC + ATT to return to the Global mode, that will over ride any individual settings for attenuation on those items, and the scanner's attenuation will now function globally again as detailed in the first 2 paragraphs above.

At this point, if you were to exit the Global attenuation mode and return back to the individual attenuation mode by pressing FUNC + ATT, any individual items that were set for attenuation when you were last in the individual settings mode, will still be as you set them... in other words, being in Global mode overrides any individual settings that you have made, but it does not erase them.

Check here, and page 16 in your WS1040 owner's manual:

I did get your message as well. Whenever I have helped program radio shack - whistlers I always do the FUNC ATT to turn the G off. All too often people have reported reception issues or dont realize it when they request updates and I will see the GA on.
Turning off the G has vastly reduced that issue.

Another tip is only program in the red control frequencies for the tower(s). Radio will be quicker to get radio calls.
So in PSREdit after downloading at Trunked Objects tab, select the system and click Edit and from their delete the other voice frequencies.
