ok right now i have my antenna (Outdoor VHF-Hi/UHF Scanner Antenna - RadioShack.com) in my walk in attic on the 3rd floor.. i have windows in my walk in attic so i have the window open screen still on. and have put the antenna right next to the window in the attic, and the antenna seems to work great there very happy with the signal i am getting... my question is would it get any better if i put the antenna out side the window or will the reception be about the same... also i was thinking of getting the scantenna 2 and was wounding if it is a better antenna then i already have..... or would i get the same signal....

thanks..

P.S also what connection does the scantenna have? pl29 or what... thanks

You are still dealing with line of sight signals so the only way to change that is to mount it outside at an increased elevation, thus allowing the antenna to "see" farther.

The ST-2 antenna has a 75-ohm F connector and comes with an F to BNC adapter.

The main reason to get the ST-2 would be to add 800 mHz reception. If the services you are interested in monitoring are all VHF-Hi and UHF, then I doubt you would see significant difference in performance between the two.

thanks i guess i will keep my antenna and set up the way i have... like i say i get great signal strength the way it is.... and sounds like just putting it out side it will stay the same.. right now its 30 feet up and no trees or anything near buy.... thanks for the info saves me money then if not a big change..

I have the same Radio Shack 20-176 in my attic and a 2nd one on a mast outside (about 10-feet higher). The attic antenna does fine, but it is noticeably better outside. I also have an ST-2 mounted on the same mast. The ST-2 does outperform the 20-176 on most bands. It's not a huge difference but it is measurably better.

Nothing that I can point to, but most comments that I've read over the years, is that the ST-2 doesn't 'add' much for 800. Do you have any first hand info to support your statement?

Nothing more than the published info on frequencies covered and reading the occasional performance report here. Those reports are mixed, as you note, although I believe some of those are due to poor choice of coax cable quality. I don't own an ST-2 and doubt that I ever will. I tend to prefer better aesthetics than I perceive in the ST-2.
