MissionCritical Communications, Radio Resource International, and Public Safety Report - wireless voice and data communications for mobile, remote and public safety operations
Executives at RACOM in Marshalltown, Iowa, announced a migration strategy for the company’s public-safety network that operates in the Midwest. The EDACS network will gradually migrate to a digital IP, Project 25 (P25)-compliant platform.
The migration will begin in the third quarter with the installation of the redundant, geographically split, master P25 controller switch, the first P25 tower sites and the communications gateway that will link the EDACS-based technology to the P25-based technology.
A RACOM P25 network will provide several benefits to end users, including common technology to provide interoperability with the statewide networks in Minnesota, Illinois and Nebraska and the Iowa statewide communications plan. Agencies can also use devices from multiple manufacturers of P25-compliant mobiles and portables.
The company’s current network will continue to operate until at least 2017 and most likely until about 2020. However, many RACOM network customers are preparing for the eventual migration of the network by buying multimode and/or multiband radios.
“Customers like Black Hawk County and Scott County (both in Iowa) have recently purchased new Harris radios that are capable of both the EDACS and P25 trunking protocols,” said a RACOM e-newsletter. “If you haven't yet migrated to P25, you will be able to communicate with those RACOM network users who have moved to P25. This is accomplished by linking the EDACS and P25 technologies together at the network level.”
