If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Quick question to those who have done alot of installs: I've currently got a Whelen Power Air Horn Plus. I was wondering if there is any way to use it to rebroadcast the radio using the speaker. I'd like to have the option to put the audio from my 7800 to a loud speaker.

If not, does anyone know if a company makes a unit the can do RRB, Airhorn, and PA?

Thanks...

After looking through the manual a little more...is there a way to use the TNC connection to feed the PA? Sorry....I'm not completely understanding the whole packet data setups.

umm...thanks. but the PA/Airhorn I have does not have RRB funtion....

So get one that does ;)

I have a code3 RLS I can sell you, but unfortunately, it has siren functions, in addition to RRB,PA,Airhorn, etc.

If you're interested in VHF only, I have a VHF spectra with Siren box, which can be set for PA/Airhorn/RRB only.

I am trying this myself with my 996T. Basically the Whelen PAP microphone has 3 wires. +, -. and PTT. You will need three new wires for this. Use Red, Black, and some other color. Get a 1/8" audio jack. Tie the red and black wires into the 1/8" jack. then tie them into the PAP box. You may have to peal away the rubing casing on your microphone to see where red and black go to. Then take your other color wire and tie it into the PAP box where the green wire from the microphone usually goes. Now splice this other color wire into the black wire. This should essentially work. You may want to add a switch in there so you can turn off the RR.

It doesnt quite work like that.

Also, if you manage to get it working after finagling with the wires, you'll most likely blow it up by sending a high-line input into a low-line amplified circuit.

please explain a bit more why it wont work...I'm not sure i understand what you are saying. I have in the past taken a simple PA microphone on a bus and created a cable which did just what i mentioned before and was able to connect to an 1/8" jack for my ipod...and this worked just fine. I guess i assumed that i could do the same with a scanner.

I can understand how it would not work by just attaching the output of the speaker to the mic input. Different line levels are not good for the input of the of the amplifier...

I'm still debating about attemping this using some parts from a bunch of professional PA system parts to match the mic to line levels...maybe some day when I actually get time off of work.
