Has anyone out there ever had any luck with with a DX 394?
I have tried just about all the Mods I could find with little improvement.
It looked like it was the beginning of a good receiver but somebody dropped the ball.
I bought a Sangean ATS 909 when they first came out and it outperforms circles around the DX 394 but it is just too small.I like tabletop radios.
To bad I can't put the ATS inside the DX 394.

I bought a 394 when they first came out myself but I never cared for the hiss in the audio for example. You can mod the audio to help or use a external speaker. I thought the gain wasn't real bad but I have and had better. I boxed it up and stuffed it in the closet and that is where it has been for some years. After you listen to something like a R75 you don't want to listen to anything else.

I thought about getting one of those a couple years ago. I opted for a ATS 909 instead. I read to many reviews that said the radio is garbage. The 909 is a great radio and comparing radios to it (even some desktops) the 909 has a chance to come out on top. The great thing about the 909 is the front-end don't over load easy, so you can smack on a pretty hefty antenna and have a hayday with the little gem. I had a ball with mine. But my recent purchase of my 320D outperforms anything I have ever had hands down. I would rank the 320 up there with some of the better tabletop models and as far as computer generated noise....I have NONE!!! Loved my 909 (wish I still had it), it was a fun little radio!

I purchased one at a flea market real cheap. Wasn't happy with the overload issues and the NB. Ended up doing most of the mods, with the exception of the narrow xtal filter swapout. The mods did a good enough job so I decided not to dump it. I mainly use it to check WWV for propagation reports and have it programmed to receive most of the common military freqs. I still get a kick listening to those EAM's and the pileups during the Ham DX contests.

I did about all the mods I could find except changing out the SSB filters. The new filters cost more than the radio.I use it to check WWV also.It is okay BCB DX using my loop antenna coupled through a preselector.
