i think the pro 164 is being discontinued because it has slowly disapperd from stores.
Since the PRO-164 is nothing more than a PSR-300 and the PSR-300 has been replaced by the PSR-310, I think you are correct. With everyone going to narrow channels, newer receivers are needed.

This Is Getting Annoying

Today, I said to myself, "why don't I go to Radio Shack and see what they don't have in stock." Actually, I went into the local RS and asked for several things: a) satellite speaker mounting system; b) USB powered satellite computer speakers & c) BNC coax extension.

Well, if you've ever seen an episode of Beavis & Butthead working at the hamburger restaurant, you know how this conversation went. "Do you happen to have a BNC coax extension?" "Uh, huh, huh, huh, let me see." He then walks to the store manager who was in the back seeing what items not to stock. She came out and found it.

Then, I asked for the wall-mounting system for satellite speakers. "Ah, huh, huh, huh, we stopped carrying those, they are not sending us any more of them and you cannot order them online either."

The store had USB-powered computer speakers, but they were pretty lame. Still, they were in stock.

I give up.

To Ensnared, Pro-90 RS Battery Pack Replacement Cat # 23-9074 only $0.97 cents *

My Radio Shack where I work had 4 of these on clearence
and I knew my buddy had an Old Uniden Digital 245 or 250 ish
that takes these same Battery Packs as your old Pro-90 does.

These old packs I'l bet have been sitting for almost 5 years now
and I figured since they were once $22.99 and now disco at 97 cents
I had better buy them for my buddy or I might walk in someday
to find them scrapped and off the deck and nobody benefits from them.

You should go to your local RS's and have them do an area wide product search
for RS Cat # 23-9074 and see if you have any luck finding these now rare jewels.
If not ask to have someone cut off a compatible pigtail off a cordless phone
battery from their battery recycle box and then maybe your local
Batteries Plus franchise can build you one. Here in SATX, we have 3 BP Inc's
and a retail store for Interstate Batteries that often does custom jobs for folks.

I hope this helps ....

ps My customers get answers and not uhhh I don't know blank looks from me :)

Yes, I have a Pro-90 and Uniden 245 for spares. Hopefully, tomorrow, UPS will be delivering my main squeeze, my GRE PSR 500.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have already had Batteries Plus make me a battery pack. It worked well and only cost around $10.00. Furthermore, I have another source, but the price is pretty steep: Scanner World - The Largest Dealer of Scanning Radios in the World

I suppose Radio Shack is attempting to streamline their most profitable items; however, I wish they would keep older parts or have information regarding where to purchase them.

In the past, I've asked Radio Shack sales personnel where I might find replacement parts. But, the answers tend to be contingent on the elapsed time from purchase.

I seriously doubt I could find a batteries for my pair of Radio Shack GMRS radios, catalog number 19-903. I was surprised to see a parts list and owner's manual. RadioShack.com

Well, I searched and actually found someone to replace these batteries, but it was not Radio Shack. I love these GMRS radios since they are pretty powerful.

Bookmarked

There are a number of companies that offer third party battery packs, or rebuild kits for your old one. Here are a few:

NiMH Battery Packs 2.4-48V

NiMh Rechargeable Batteries - Rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride Battery Ni-MH Batteries 1.2V AA AAA C D 9C SubC 4/5 2/3

I remember when Radio Shark actually sold radios. Now it's just a cell phone store......

Rob N4JKL

Thanks. I appreciate that. I have bookmarked these pages. When & if I ever decide to use these GMRS radios, I will keep that in mind. Truthfully, I only used these GMRS radios at Mardi Gras in Galveston. I let my GMRS license expire because I refused to pay $85.00 for five more years. I am waiting on GMRS to go the way of CB. Ha.

When I go into a RadioShack to buy a discontinued scanner I ask the employee to do a district and regional search for that scanner. That's how I got my Pro-26 back in the day for 90 some bucks. The same method could be used for parts maybe.

The next time I am in the local RS, I will present this to them. Then, I will see how motivated they are to accommodate me. I will post my findings.

Thanks

Radio Shack Slogans

You know, in the aftermath of my recent ordeal with the local Radio Shack store attempting to find a rechargable battery pack for my Pro 90 and Uniden 245, I received an email from Radio Shack with the following in the subject line: "Locate your hard-to-find battery right here."

Therefore, I got on my soapbox and let them hear my opinion about customer support.

I believe their absolute worst slogan was, "you've got questions, we've got answers."

Yes, the latter slogan might be true in some stores, but I believe I have actually encountered staff attempting to function with only a brain stem.

I am just having some fun. Oh well, it is such a pretty day outside. I might go make fajitas on the sidewalk.

Yes, it's a shame. I can remember when inorder to work there you had to actually know something about radios and Electronics. Now they barly know where things are in the store. I asked for an SWR Meter, and they showed me an ohm meter. I guess I'll have to start looking for the local truck stop for the things i need...

Oh, that is choice. I love that. If you ever find yourself blessed with a competent RS representative, foster that relationship. They can be worth their weight in gold.

I will say this about one such RS worker. When I was attempting to find a good point and shoot camera for concerts, etc., he directed me to the Canon SD 1200 IS. Wow, what a great little camera this has turned out to be. The color balance, quality of shots, & video capabilities are great. Of course, when asking about concert questions, I go with the longer haired fellows who look they could get in a mosh pit. Ha.

But, unfortunately, he no longer works at RS.

Yes, it would make perfect sense if all RS personnel were knowledgeable about radios and electronics; however, the price of products might escalate as well. I bet they are paying these people minimum wage to boot.

They probably fired him.
It has been my experience that if a person gets too competent and is moving up the ranks in the hierarchy, some regional or district level person worried about their job will find a reason to fire them.

I appreciated that bit of humor. Some, are threatened by competence, aren't they?

Radio Shack is a rather odd animal that has transformed over the years.

I have been tempted to go in to radio shack on occasion for a scanner accessory or part. But then, I remember my nightmarish past experiences with the utterly clueless "Reps" and keep walking briskly. I'll stick to Ebay, Scanner Master/World and Fry's.

Fry's Is Awesome

I have been tempted to go in to radio shack on occasion for a scanner accessory or part. But then, I remember my nightmarish past experiences with the utterly clueless "Reps" and keep walking briskly. I'll stick to Ebay, Scanner Master/World and Fry's.

The first time I walked into Fry's in Austin, I was overwhelmed. It was like the first time I walked into the Astrodome back in 1965 or 1966. Huge! This is where I bought this Lenovo. Great deals and fairly responsive staff. See, you can have helpfulness and discounts, eh? This is something Wal-Mart needs to follow.

In order to go to Fry's, I have to navigate the streets of Austin, Texas. I would rather have a dull-beaked snapping turtle gnaw off my private parts than drive in Austin, Texas.

But, this is why I love Waco. I can go to DFW or Houston for Fry's. I might travel there soon.

I learned my lesson on electronic purchases on Ebay and non-authorized stores.

I bought my Beltronics 995, which is still working like a champ, on Ebay. Later, I learned that Beltronics has a list of authorized dealers. I don't know if warranty work would ever become an issue with them.

On the other hand, I bought my GRE PSR 500 from a store that sold: Fender guitars; Harley parts; scanners and other things. They sold me a Canadian model scanner. Eventually, they made good on it and replaced it with a brand new one. So, I will stick with Scanner Master, Grove and other authorized dealers for electronics.

I wonder what it is like to work for RS? I will have to ask someone on the sly when they are outside of RS. I am semi-retired, I might try. Ha.

Question on Fry's

I know I saw an Oscilloscope-looking device in Fry's. Also, I might have seen some Ham equipment, but I don't recall seeing any scanners. It has been some time. Can you buy scanners or monitoring antennas there? I would appreciate a response.

I too don't always like going to RS either.

Incredible Universe

I remember the Radio Shack or Tandy Corporation used to have a large store near the 610 & Highway 59 Loop called Incredible Universe; however, it did not last.

Radio Shack merchandise, if my memory serves me, was fairly well-stocked.

Fry's used to carry scanners way back when they first opened up, Now I don't know I always found anything I bought at frys was usually a piece of crap anyway. I spent more time in the return Line than I did looking for things...
