Hi,

Is there a way for the 396XT to receive short wave? Perhaps something like a low band modulator that connects to the antenna receptor?

This would be flaky at best. Your better bet is to get a dedicated SW portable, desktop, or even an used ham transceiver (most modern models have built in general coverage receivers).

There would be so many compromises for selectivity, strong signal handling not to mention the lack of any kind of sideband detection, that such a converter would be more of a joke than anything useful

Thanks for the responses.

I have a Luke that has a lot of SW (A/B, 8 bands each). It does very well with a long wire SW antenna. I end up with 3 channels per frequency.

Was just wondering if anyone figured out a way to use a low band filter on the antenna to get the 386XT to receive SW.

I know this isn't the correct answer to your question but it is the best I can come up with.

1. Uniden makes (made) the BR330T scanner which can pick up lower frequencies much like other "Wide Band" receivers, but can't receive SSB.

2. If you are looking for a receiver with the same form factor as the BCCD396T, perhaps you might consider a "Wide Band" receiver made by such companies as Alinco, AOR, Icom, and Yaesu, all of which offer models which can receive lower frequencies (and SSB).

3. I believe the type of device that you are looking for is called a "Transverter", but I have only seen models that convert the higher input frequency to a lower output frequency. I don't recall seeing a lower to higher frequency device.

This sounds exactly what I'm looking for... If I can't find one, I'll have to see if I can build one...
