This is my 1st post, so I thank everyone in advance who can help me out. Here is some info about me that may help. I've never used a scanner before. I want a portable model. Being that I am surrounded by military bases, I think that I would need a digital scanner to listen in on military jets, helicopters, etc. I also read that the Japanese police also use digital. Thus far, I am leaning towards the Uniden BCD396XT. Does this seem like a good start for my needs? Any other suggestions? Also, will I need to use software with the optional USB cable to program the scanner. I was unsure as to this matter because of my living overseas. Thanking you for your help.

The commercial aircraft freqs. are the same as here, but Public Safety may use different freq. ranges than here and they may be sensitive about military freqs., so you might be better off to buy a Japanese scanner - AOR comes to mind.
You might try to find a Japanese Ham who might know more. The QRZ.com web site might be useful.
