as long as you are on wifi I don't see why you couldn't use the apps that are on the play store, there are a variety of them which I won't name because i'm not sure if i'm allowed to.

Since the other apps are competing for the the same users, I would be careful to check out the copyright or legal use agreement that the app might have.

This may not be a very good long term solution.
I used to run a program on spare android devices that donated CPU time to world community grid. Over time the phone batteries would go bad and swell up. Because you have the phone always plugged in and using power the batteries dont handle it well. So if you do this check the batteries weekly or at minimum monthly. If they start to swell replace them.

Use a cheap 110Volt light timer to turn the charger off and on.. We use cellphones for wifi access at several repeater sites. We turn the charger on for 4 hours then off for 4 hours.. No more battery issues
