Thanks. I'm beginning to think they did convert over. I talked to a constable last night and he said that they are supposed to be changing to encryption.

I think you nailed it. Tac 5 & 6 have been very busy and I've never heard anything on those talkgroups before. Encrypted damn it......

This encryption stuff sucks. Somebody needs to come up with a way to decipher this stuff. If Motorola can do it with their radios, Uniden should be able to do it also...

I think it is illegal to decode encryption, last I heard anyways, you also have to have the encryption key for that talkgroup or channel and those are kept by a radio tech for local and state agencies normally and the feds have there own person in charge for there keys, they won't even let the radio techs have there key loaders. But anything can be done with computers, just depends on how willing someone is to spend money on the equitment and time on research. It would be nice to at least be able to monitor you local dispatch channels. I understand encryption on Narc, SWAT etc....type channels but normal dispatch channels seems a little paranoid. I know a lot of agences that have city issued nextel phones and use analog radios for ops and anything they deme sensitive they just pass it on on the nextel.

The actual decryption process is nothing major. Uniden could likely implement this using the existing hardware. However, the trouble is recovering the key. There are three major types of encryption in use:
ADP - 40-bit keys, allowing 2^40 combinations (that's 1,099,511,627,776 keys)
DES - 56-bit keys, 2^56 combinations
AES-256 - 256-bit keys, 2^256 combinations

Looking at a simple brute-force attack against the key and ignoring known attacks which lessen the sample space, ADP is possible with enough horsepower and enough time, DES is possible with dedicated hardware, and AES is, for the membership of this forum, utterly impossible. All of these attacks require serious cryptanalysis abilities and expensive hardware. Not something you're going to do in a scanner.

And, even if you could do it, it's still illegal.

Using Nextel for "sensitive" traffic is a bad idea. It's horribly broken, just like GSM.

This is a local government policy issue, not a technical issue. If voters want a monitorable system, they can press the policy makers to do so.

Cracking encryption with DES and some of the others isn't about brute-force. DES has flaws, which allow for significantly reduced crack times. The main hurdle would be building the software / hardware setup to do it.

Plus, with GPU cracking, you can crack over 10x as fast as any processor. Get two high powered GPUs and you can do over 20-40k tries per second.

Like all encryption, this will only last so long. It won't be long until this software exists. How much $$ will Motorola stand to make when it's time to upgrade encryption schemes?

Round Rock, why?

Initially, Round Rock was one of the few LE agencies in Williamson county that did not encrypt. Later, they decide to encrypt their transmissions. There is a missing piece of the puzzle here. I wonder why they decided to do this?

I wonder if officers ran across a Smart Phone or scanner during a criminal investigation? Does anyone know?

RR DB Williamson County

I've been following this thread for a while. I've not traveled down IH35 in a several months and getting ready to depart.

So, I am curious. If RR PD has gone encrypted, does the RR DB reflect these changes? When I reviewed RR, I am seeing only one "E" listed.

Passing Through Round Rock

It needs to be updated. No one has taken the time to verify which groups are encrypted.

Next week, I'll be passing through RR and see if I can hear anything at all. From what I've gathered, the people in Williamson county criminal justice are rather nuts. I've been hearing how they make it difficult for people who find themselves in trouble.

Since I dealt with all types of aberrant personalities in prison, I know when someone is going out of their way to be an arse. When I worked intake triage, I used to get a lot of parole violations from Williamson county for minor things that most people wouldn't waste their time on.

Oh well, I don't like going through that county given their nasty disposition & need for secrecy with their radios. In other words, something stinks in that county.

I don't really want to know why they encrypt everything. Power thrusting, I suppose.

With site logging, I can quickly build a list of groups that use encryption. The "P4" entries below are all "protected" calls. That's P25 language for encryption. DPS and some FD/EMS groups are in-the-clear. Most traffic is not.

Round Rock Fire Dept is still unencrypted. Them and DPS, EMT units talking to the hospitals, and the county road crews is all I hear.

Hey Uni, can you explain what all those numbers are in what you posted?

The first number is the date and time as YYYYMMDDHHMMSS.

Second is the site number. Wilco is site 1-20 (combined RFSS & site #) or 1*256+20=276.

Fourth column is speaking party's radio ID.

Fifth and sixth column are the audience. G followed by a group ID or I followed by a radio ID.

Seventh column is the channel #.

Last column is the service type. E for emergency calls. P for protected. The numeric digit is the call priority which can be 1 to 7.

RR: Another One Bites The Dust

What a disappointment. I sympathize with those living in Williamson county. I suppose Barry Cooper isn't the only person hassled by Williamson county. I am going to watch myself when traveling through this maze of mayhem. All I heard was the RR fire department.

Round Rock PD moved to Tac 5 and 6 and are now encrypted. There may be some other talkgroups that are not encrypted.

Don't forget, this is a policy issue. The encryption switch can be turned off. If you are registered to vote in Williamson County, make your voice heard Tuesday.
