Looking for a couple of crystals for an old school Bearcat scanner. Any info on where I might be able to get some would be greatly appreciated. The frequencies are 150.725 and 171.990. Thanks

It is important to remember that older crystal controlled scanners did not have tracked tuned front ends. Therefore, if you have a 20MHz spread there will be a loss of sensitivity at one end or the other. My old Regency scanner was tuned at about 155MHz for high band and about 45MHz for low band. The bandwidth was fairly narrow but could be retuned if desired. CHP at 42MHz was OK. USFS at 36MHz in those days was not so hot.

I understand the allure of breathing life into old crystal scanners, as I've done so myself, but for the cost of one or two crystals from a retailer, you can buy a used programmable scanner. You just have to be patient and watch for the deals.

I only populated my (free) crystal scanners because the ex-manager of a RadioShack gave me his compartmentalized box of about 50 crystals from his old store, and some of the frequencies were still in use.

Good luck in your search, anyways!

Another point. Crystals were often a little off frequency or just plain bad. Professional receivers had crystal netting capacitors to slightly adjust the frequency. Connect to the discriminator test point and adjust for zero while listening to a transmission. Few if any consumer scanners had this feature. My local radio store (remember those) was endlessly patient in replacing defective crystals. I don't miss those days.

Picked up a total of 6 Bearcat III and IV scanners at a hamfest a couple of years ago for $5.00. That included a total of 27 crystals with 19 different frequencies. All in all 3 of the crystals still work in my old Bearcat III but one is a weather frequency. I tossed 4 of the scanners because of broken boards. Sorry I don't have either crystal you want.
