I'd like to get a scanner for listening to Wood Co. Sheriff, fire and OSP in NW Ohio. I haven't been into scanners for 20 years so all that I knew back then is old tech and I have no idea where to start new. I was recommended the Whistler WS1040. It is in my price range on Amazon. Some of the reviews I read are that is very hard to program. Does anyone have any advice on a scanner or is there anybody or business in NW Ohio that sells or sets up a scanner? I would also like to have one that won't be outdated in a few years if that is possible. Thanks for any help.

Wow! The Uniden and Whistler forums are filled with answers to your questions. A little research by you would give you your answers. But here is some advice. Your requirement of "Outdated" is a killer. Every one of the Whistler scanners are already 10 years + old in technology. All of Uniden scanners are likewise old technology except for the SDS100 and 200 series. The Uniden SDS's are not cheap and the Whistler prices are high for 10 year + technology. Programming the Whistler radios using software is very easy and just takes a little patience to understand the technology of how the scanners work. Uniden scanners are a little more difficult to program than Whistlers but again once the technology is understood they are easy to program too. Do not pay someone to program your scanner of choice. You will pay a big buck for that when I am sure you can do it your self with some advice here on the forums.

Wood County is not the easiest county to monitor. If you want to cover everything in the county you will need a scanner that can do P25, DMR, and analog well. If you live closer to Bowling Green, then any P25 scanner will work as you can monitor the BG site of the Northwest Ohio Public Safety Radio System. If your in the northern end of the county then you will need a scanner that works good on P25 simulcast systems to monitor the NWOPSRS, like the Uniden SDS100 and SDS200. That system covers public safety in northern Wood County. If you want to listen to Wood County Sheriff, BG police and fire, BGSU PD and the smaller rural villages PD's then you will need a scanner that can scan DMR systems. OSP and the rural fire departments are on the MARCS P25 statewide system.

Thanks for the info. I'm on the south end of Wood Co.

Since you are in the south end of the county, P25 simulcast will not be an issue for you. You will just need a scanner that can do P25 and DMR.
