Well i'm a volunteer firefighter, among other things, and i'm looking to get a scanner for work related purposes. I'm not looking for anything fancy just needs to be able to program a couple of channels. Would like handheld scanner, but not sure how these would work in my car since i don't have room to mount one in it. Looking for any info can get, is using a hand held in you're car okay? Also one that is easily programmable would be great.

Will be scanning

According to Sedgwick County, most of Sedgwick is on an 800 analog trunking systems: Wichita / Sedgwick County Trunking System So you will need a trunking analog scanner. Lots of those around, but Radio Shack bank scanners are the simplest to understand and program. I'm not a Radio Shack fan (I would prefer going direct to GRE, but RS does have better sale prices), so I'll show you only one that would work well, but there are others. http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Pro-164 You might also note that this is similar to http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/PSR-300 FYI, the PSR-300 is being replaced by http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/PSR-310 which does not have banks. Banks are easier to understand, but have less flexibility. However, your needs seem to dictate simple, so I would stick with banks.

While the 164 and 300 are certainly viable choices you might want to consider touching base with other Sedgwick scannists and see what they are using. You can go to our Kansas discussion forum and see what you can find out.

The other thing I would mention is that we have a section in our wiki devoted to links for scanner mounts in this article.. They might give you some ideas on mounting. You should also check out our shack and mobile setup and our Installation forums and see if others have some ideas about mounting. You didn't say anything about the make/model of your car; that's an important question here.

Note that anything in blue is a link...best regards...Mike

I use a 96 impala SS for responding so i don't have much room to mount equipment in there. I'd like to go with a handheld that way i can use it as a handheld and when i'm in my car maybe hook it up to an external antenna.

Thanks!
