Scanner question

The question I have is that I'm having a problem with a scanner I have(or atleast I think it can be fixed). My gf's father gave me two scanners; an old Uniden BCT7, and a better Uniden BCT8 Trunk Tracker(this one I mainly use).

I'm pretty sure I've set my local frequencies and talk group ID's correctly. My area uses Motorola Type II, analog trunking. I pick up a lot of transmissions back and forth between dispatch and mobiles, but the rest of the time, I'm picking up what sounds like snow from a disconnected TV. I have the squelch set correctly. The interference I hear sounds like it's a transmission, because it has the transmit click that you hear after someone talks. Now, I think it's just a cop that is just out of my range, because I'm pretty sure it's someone talking. I just get a static instead of a voice. Is this the case? It's kind of hard to explain but I did my best so far.

What system are you using there? Go up to the Database link in the top left under the site title in the blue toolbar. Get the URL for your system. Is it using digital or encryption? If it's digital, the BCT8 won't handle it. If it's encryption (kinda sounds like it) no scanner can decode it.

I've located my area. Where does it say encrypted or digital?

Also, a friend of mine said what I'm hearing is DES encryption, but I read that DES encryption is obsolete.?

Look at the MODE column in the talkgroup listings. Float your mouse over it, and you should get a balloon which gives you the various abbreviations and meanings.

Let's see what you see. Give us the URL of your system. Regardless of the method, if a talkgroup is encrypted, it's useless to you

OK which trunk system in Seminole? Go to the bottom of the link you provided - that's where the trunks in your area are listed.

If you're talking about Seminole county's system, there are a number of unidentified and unknown talkgroups listed. I'd jump down to the Florida forum and see if someone has some better information on that system. I still think you've encountered some encrypted talkgroups - maybe others have done the same, which would confirm the observation. Looks like a good deal of research is needed on that system.

You might want to start by maintaining a list of those talkgroups that have this 'noise' on them; it would be useful information for such future research.

best regards..Mike

Oh, nice. I didn't realize there were specific state forums.

Anyways, I've came to the conclusion that I'll just have to deal with it. I'm pretty sure it's in face encrypted.

Thanks for all your help, Mike.
