Have you ever been questioned about a scanner by a cop.

this could be in your car, or anywhere else.

Perfectly legal where I am (NJ), but if pulled over, I would (at least) turn it off and more likely, put it on the floor.

P.S., never happened

Or produce my ID for the Fire Dept support Org. that I am a member of. RACES ID, Amatuer Radio License etc. Be respectful and forthcoming. Police officers have a really good BS detector.

The locals seem to be awfully nosy when it comes to the painfully obvious, they never fail to ask "Is that a scanner?" I just say "yeah" and change the subject.

Scanning while mobile

Have you ever been questioned about a scanner by a cop.

this could be in your car, or anywhere else.

I was stopped about 6 months ago by one of our county dep. and when he came up to my window he just said "You have some nice radio equipment, you're not afraid of us are you?" I explained to him that I like knowing what's going on around me. Nothing was said after that but in case he didn't know it is legal for mobile monitoring in WV. I just couldn't help but laugh when I heard all of my info. go across the air.

When a cop sees 4 teenagers packed into a tinted Civic SI coupe at 3 in the morning, he's going to pull them over.

Asks me "What's the antenna for"? (Antenex Quarterwave)

My reply: "Boating Maritime Radio"

Him: "Volunteer Firefighter?"

Me: "Yep, all 4 of us"

Him: "Have a good night ;-)"

In Michigan, you don't have to worry about being stopped by the police, and having a scanner in your vehicle, or on your person. If you're asked questions about why you have a scanner, you are not required by law to respond. We live in a free state.

I'm glad they made it that way. It's only been that way for a few years.

You are not required by law to respond in any state. However you can make your life a little more miserable with the cop by being a richard instead of answering a simple question.

They've been curious about it! In fact, one guy asked which version to buy! On another stop I think the officer was a little pissed at the fact I could monitor the so-called "un-monitorable" system. He did a radio check to find out. Which was cool for me. I noticed the delay in audio from my radio to his. Back then I would experiment with the question, "I use to monitor you guys with analog or a marine radio and now I can't. What's the deal?" The reply would be something like, "the new system is un-mnitorable and I believe the radio is several thousand dollars." All the while I had a BC296D on hand. But! he did mention the live feed on the Internet...

I live up to my usernmae in more than one way. :p

In colorado and 85% homebound, but I am curious. If I am stopped and carrying, can they use my scanner as probable cause to search my vehicle?

It Depends

It probably depends on what you mean by "and carrying" - the scanner or what LEOs usually mean when they refer to carrying...:)

I apologize. Carrying the scanner in my vehicle. Other than me Big Dog, grandson, couple sacks of food, that pretty much sums it up.

I remember reading somewhere that if you have a police scanner on you and then comment a crime. It would add more charges. I know everyone here have no plan ever to do that, but that's just one other reason to tell the cop about the scanner. There are alot of laws and codes a police officer can ticket you or arrest you for if you get on his bad side.

This is my first post in along time and I am just getting back into scanners. So if you disagree with me go easy......
