I'm sure that this topic has been dsicussed before, but i'm just still curious what the laws are on it.

I'm going to a nascar race in the end or march and of course I will be bringing my scanner to listen to the drivers. Can I bring my scanner aboard the plane?? I will only have a carry on so I will have the scanner right next to me. Obviously I can imagine and I don't plan on it, they don't want or don't allow the use of them onboard but am I still allowed to bring it onboard??

Thank you!

Sure you can bring it with you. When going through the carry on baggage scanning machine area you may be asked to turn it on(so they can see its not a bomb) but once on the aircraft you are best advised to remove the battery for safety reasons. Usage of this type of device is not allowed to be used during flight time. The airlines are touchy about certain kinds of electronic devices which may possibly cause errors with their navigational equipment.

flew out to texas a couple of years ago had scanners. frs radios wiith headsets, and camera gear in my carryon had no problems at chicago midway on the way there. airport in Tx did not even care. listened to scanners both ways with ear buds. last june went out to san diego had a light jacket on with a scanner in both pockets also with earbuds had both radios on from o'hare to ca and back no one knew. the jacket was put through the x-ray machine along with my carry on tsa never said anything. if you are interested i belive it is american airlines has a channel called flight deck where you can listen to the aircraft radios.

You are supposed to ask the capt or flight crew for permission to do that. In each case when I asked I was politely told no. I know its not much of one but you took a chance when doing that. The thought in my mind is that its not worth the smallest chance especially at 30,000 feet.

It is American Airlines which I will be flying.... do you by chance have that Freq. for that channel??
It would be an audio channel in the plane's on-board entertainment system. Make sure you get headphones and the literature in the seatback should tell you what channel number it is on.

You may also enjoy listening while you're on the ground. Look up the frequencies in advance -- www.airnav.com and the World Aeronautical Database are good for this.

I wouldn't bring the scanner with you on the plane. Although, they have general rules and may NOT have them on their prohibited list, if the particular TSA agent looking through your bags doesn't like the look of your scanner, they may ask you to go all the way back and check it in or just confiscate it completely. In regards to something as expensive/valuable as a scanner, I wouldn't take that chance if I were you. Don't carry it on.

Actually, there is no rule regarding them in your carry-on luggge. I do it about twice a month - whether domestically or internationally. I know of no airline that permits the use of scanners in flight as a matter of their corporate policy. Aircraft commanders must follow their airline policies. You can check with the airline website but the answer has been a definitive no in all cases that I'm aware of. There are loads of other threads here that discuss this issue ad nauseum and with the same end result.

I flew to O'Hare last year and used my iPod earphones to plug into the onboard entertainment jack...listened the enitre flight to the pilot/ground. Was very cool...everytime the pilot would switch channels, the onboard monitor goes with him.

Hi All, well 1st off there is no problems bringing scanners on planes as carry on. I do it all the time domestically, they stay home unless I'm going to Canada.

If you want to hear the ATC fly United and tune to ch9 They are the only domestic airline that does this. 90% of the time it is tied in.

2 1/2 weeks ago I was flying from Orange Co to Dallas during a NFL playoff game I really wanted to hear. I decided to ask the pilot if he cared if I listened in on a scanner. He said I obviously knew the policy was but as far as he was concerned people leaving cell phones on in flight was a bigger "non problem" so just don't let the crew see you otherwise they'll take it and hold it for the remainder of the flight.

So, I was able to scan the FOX TV channels and only missed about :15 of the game somewhere over NM....and the plane obviously didn't crash or end up in Oshkosh since GPS is used to guide them these days.

Funny thing was I had at least 2 iDEN phones pinging away the whole flight every minute or so......

I just got back from Florida yesterday via Continental Airlines. I brought my scanner in my carry-on in an empty pocket in my camera bag. It went through no problems, no questions. The only thing they had an issue with was my wife's shampoo bottle. It was too big.

We went on a cruise out of Port Everglades & had no issues there either. Just got back yesterday, the 9th of GFebuary, 2008. I always bring my scanner on my carry-on & fly at least twice a year - every year post 9/11 & never had an issue.

Thank you to those who have helped in answering the question! I must just say I love this site. Learning what is going on before it's in newspapers and everyone so politely answering questions and providing stories. It really is a great time.
