I enjoy listening to MECA but there is so much on the air all the time it is difficult to keep up when something catches my ear. I was just wandering how the pros do it.

Having multiple scanners monitoring different talkgroups is the way I deal with monitoring large systems like the MECA in Indianapolis. Of course, that will get rather expensive once they go digital...

With the BCD396 I just make a smaller system to scan, and scan in ID mode only. Quick and gets the talk groups I really like or want to listen to.

QK-15 is Henryville searching all ID's
QK-9 is just my county and mutual aid.

Having multiple scanners is probably the only answer, but I'm sure there's a point where your brain simply cannot absorb multiple conversations at any one given time. When I'm in my garage tinkering around, I have one portable radio, a fire pager and two scanners going, and I miss stuff regularly.

Generally speaking, the more significant the emergency is, it will be heard on numerous talkgroups as it will involve numerous entities.

Also tone of voice over the radio clues me in a lot. There is always someone, dispatcher, firefighter, police officer who's voice changes in pitch, volume, etc, and I know i better start listening closely. I usually miss the initial dispatch, but they'll start sending "help" and I'll figure it out. Or in my area, if the Sheriff tries to keep it quiet, the Sate will broadcast it on Safe-T.
