I'm not sure what type of scanner that you have, but you will need one that is a trunk tracker as PG County operates on a trunked system.

PG Fire operates in the 49x.xxxx range, and is NOT a trunked system. Most scanners made in the last 10-15 years should allow you to program in their system. Check out the database section of this website for the proper frequencies. Also, the PG frequency should be 7 numbers - 49x.xxxx, not 8 - and you only need to enter the first 6 on most older scanners, for example 495.187 is good for 495.1875 (this is not an actual pg frequency, btw)

A lot of older scanners don't carry the number to the right of the decimal more than 3 digitis. So for 494.6875, just enter 494.687.

Have you been able to program any frequency and get it to work?.... Maybe the radio is broken.

Sorry for the wrong info. I assumed since PG simulcasts their dispatch on 46.12 that it was something other than a conventional type system. I had always heard it was a trunk system. Being in PA I obviously cannot pick them up from here.

If you put all PGs freqs in, and didn't hear anything in about 1 minute, something is wrong. PG talks so much you might have to dedicate a radio to each channel some days...

Have you got an antenna connected? Seriously, there's so much activity on those freqs it should be jumping even with a little stock whip that comes with many of these el-cheapos.

Looking at the database, you should program in those frequencies that are in green. The ones labeled input you would need to be close to the action to hear anything.

A good test of a receiver is to program a LOCAL National Weather Service channel in. Most receivers will pick this up, as it is usally very strong. A good freq for the DC area is 162.55 Mhz. I have used this to test antennas.

You don't have to use the CTCSS tones, but it always helps (helps to eliminate unwanted signals like intermod). Most of PGFD and PGPD use 127.3, but there are a small few freqs that use higher CTCSS tones.
