Hi all,

Anyone can recommend a good performer SDR to be used on VHF airband? Most of them work on 118–136.975 MHz but some feedback on the most suited product is welcomed!

Thank you and best regards

I am happy with my airspy (I think it's version 1), running frequency scanner plug-in and SDRsharp. It can cover that entire range very quickly. If you are in the US and near any radio stations, a good quality FM radio station filter (88-108) can greatly improve performance; I use one. The airspy performs OK without it, much better with.

FYI I'm using a somewhat older version of SDRsharp as I've had stability issues with some of the newer releases; maybe it's just me.

Thank you for the quick reply.
My intention is to listen remotely so it is a requisite for the SDR I intend to buy. The airspy can be operated via a web interface?
Do you have any particular FM bandstop filter which you recommend?

Some of the knowledgeable folks on this website suggest the one from Mini circuits. I have had good luck with an inexpensive rockwell/collins unit I got on ebay for cheap. I would not be surprised of the mini circuits model has better specs. Also only use the filter if you have too, any filter may have loss. If you don't see the wideband FM radio emissions on your scope when you crank up the gain, you may not need the filter.

Not exactly. My understanding is that Airspy can be used remotely, but its not a web interface. You run a server program on the computer connected to the airspy, and the remote computer connects via airspy itself. So you use the airspy program remotely with the help of a local server program, but its not a web interface. If you download a copy of airspy that is current, you will see the option to connect to other peoples airspys on the internet. So that's a good way to trial it.

I would add that you may do just as well with the airspy MINI for less cost. I have one as well and am pleased.

Have a look at this thread, comparing filters.

Oh, be advised I'm not sure if SDRsharp supports plugins remotely. It might, I'm just not sure.

Thanks again for all of your help!
I'll look firstly in FM bandstop filters and then proceed to the SDR choice... FM band signals are really strong at my location.
