I know I post a lot of forms but I just can’t wrap my head around this and I don’t know if it’s normal or not. So today I was walking around and I say a police officer leaving a restaurant and I went up to him and asked if he can do a radio check on his radio for me. The officer was right next to me it’s links but it doesn’t say p25 but when I was a few yards away from him a further distant I heard him. Is that because he’s not transmitting on the repeater also could it be the wide invert and use site nac I have selected I just turn ignore site nac. I’ll like to get a fix for this so I can go to the fire department up the street or the police department and see if they can do one for me again it’ll be neat to hear a officer that’s right next to me come thru on the sds100. My Squelch is at 2 and I had this problem before on 1 I thought that was the problem but I was clearly wrong

Based on your past comments, I believe you may be talking about a trunked system, though I don't recall which specific one. If that is correct, the officer transmitting either with his portable or vehicle radio is using a frequency very different from the site frequencies that you program in the scanner.

If you are too close to the officer's radio, it may be overloading your scanner. You are also taking a chance that the very strong, close by signal, can damage your scanner. For Close Call to work, the signal must be significantly stronger than other signals at that point. If the system in question is P25 Phase II, I don't believe that Close Call would work, as it requires a continuous signal. For Phase II, and DMR as well, the transmission is using only one of the two "slots", and it is alternating between transmit and a very brief pause.

The officer's radio is overloading your sds. The officer's radio is on a different frequency than any of the transmitter towers (site) which is what your sds is tuned to. Most cops don't have time to play radio check.

Suffice to say asking someone to press the xmit button on their radio so you can capture their xmit frequency/PL code may not work if you are right on top of them. Put 5-10 ft between you when you do this.

(Eye roll....)
I'd suggest you don't be a PITA to first responders. They probably have MUCH better things to do than to do radio checks for you.

You ask a lot of questions - not sure you are comprehending the answers.....(?!!)
Most everyone here is glad to help (me included), but it requires some effort at understanding from the person asking.

Squelch = 2 is the normal setting that most use.

So, you are walking around (mobile) with a filter activated?
Remember , filters are to mitigate a specific RF environment, which are LOCATION related. Once you move from that location, the RF environment changes and so does the requirement for a specific filter. Keeping a filter in place when you move from a certain location isn't wise - or recommended.

Idk I just wanted to ask the filters are fine I used them in my house and in those rf bad areas I’m done trying to mess with those I found a good level I’ve been using wide invert. I just don’t understand why I’m able to hear people far away from me but not close enough but I understand know. And I’m done sending my sds100 in for repairs when I’m getting bad signal it says -60 dbm so idk I don’t wanna be a month without a scanner again I concur that area that I was having trouble with so I was just curious why I was able to hear a officer like 7 feet away from me but when I’m a foot away from them I couldn’t hear.

Especially when it said link data but not p25

Next, they'll be going to the police station asking them to program the radio for them.....
