I wasn't implying I wasn't happy with the situation, I don't even own one (yet). I just don't understand why it was designed with features that no one apparently understands what they do or how and when to use them. Would you accept a new vehicle with a fancy computer/navagation system you paid extra for but you can't even use it? It was designed by Uniden correct? Did the engineer quit?
So just don't buy one.

No one is asking for any propriatary trade secrets to be divulged. All people want to know is how and when you should be using them. I'm sure someone will document it eventually.

How and when to use them will vary by individual location / situation / given system. There is no way to give a blanket answer for that question.

It pretty simple if you have a reception issue, try each filter to see if it helps. If not then you SOL it isn't necessary to know exactly how they work. A high pass filter passes higher, a low pass filter passes lower. One is a little wider than the other.

How and when to use the SDS100/200 Filters
#1 If you are not hearing radio traffic use a filter.
#2 If your radio traffic is not clear use a filter.
#3 You may have to try different filters to get the wanted effect.
Did some one tell you when and how to use a raincoat!

Keep in mind the SDS series are a 'work-in-progress'. They were pretty much released in a beta state (still in development) as with the case with most all scanners these days. As new features are discovered and improvements are discovered, new firmware releases become available. That's the nature of the hobby and sometimes half the fun!

I would have prefered to wait till it was not released in beta, we sure didn't get a $ discount to be beta testers and I say that because there is hardware involved here as well. Not everything can be fixed with a software/firmware patch.... (tin foil hacks and humming come to mind). What happens when a bug is discovered they can't fix with a firmware update, guess we own that problem eh?

It's a feature in the hidden menu. We aren't allowed to discuss that menu though (it's where all the cool options are to make things work correctly - experts and insiders only).

Next violation you get a radio with no labels and menus are in Chinese.

Do I use a light raincoat, a heavy raincoat or an inverted raincoat?

If the rain is coming out of the east, use a normal raincoat. If the west....inverted. If you're in the middle of a hurricane, tornado, monsoon, typhoon, well....you'll need the wide one... aka heavy. Someone will argue my sense of direction and tell me I'm wrong...three or four posts down...wait for it...

But this is the thing. I can take the new SDS100 I have from point A to point B and have it behave completely different. There is no set way to implement the filters. Try and find what works, and don't forget that handy dandy IFX when all else fails...or vice versa...sometimes it works alone without the filters.
