Hi im trying to get into stringer journalism and not sure what equipment package im going to need yet. I think the sds200 would be the ultimate for starting out but not sure about what I can hear. Can someone help me understand what channels I can listen to from this list?

Specifically under trunked it says LVMPD (las vegas metro) does that mean i can't listen?

I remember starting as a stringer with newspapers, Philadelphia Bulletin when I first started driving back in the sixties, I'm a retired editor of a seven day a week daily on a pension.

Unlike me, who had his own dark room at age 16 and could deliver a typewritten story, along with several photos developed that they could velox and use, you are up against all of the nut jobs out there with cell phones who are not professionals and don't have a clue, not what a professional journalist is.

If you want to pursue the career, it's a dead end, all advertising has been lost by newspapers and the ones that stick around are very thin or they run their photos off the AP wire very, very large to make up for their lack of text LOL.

Listening to police broadcast on slide rule dial receivers before there were Crystal controlled scanners, that's what made me successful. Always get the story not just the photos, interview the cops, get the cell phone number or contact for the officer in charge to give to the news source to follow up.

Always having numerous radios in my car, is what got me promoted.

I don't consider this off topic, considering what you are asking about, but what kind of cameras do you use? Do you have fast lenses? 2.8 or better? Are you just video for TV?

Before you worry about how do you use the scanner to follow spot news. Check in with your local newspapers and TV stations and establish a relationship with the publishers and editors involved. What's their budget for freelance contributions?

From your question I'm judging that you are not a professional and they only hire professionals as I did.

Respect police lines, don't argue with cops, don't let them know you're there before you get all the video or photos you need then show up to let them throw you out LOL. If it's a big event, somebody will buy it, don't give it away with promises, they'll just put it on the wire and you'll never see a dime. Good luck.. Bob

Hi Bob, great knowledge you shared thanks. That's awesome you're retired from journalism I bet you have some stories u could tell! I'm definitely a beginner. My area is mohave County and we don't have a news outlet. We have papers. That's about it besides there's 1 guy that does his own thing solo and posts of Facebook. I'm not really competitive with anyone. I seen recently that people are doing YouTube lives in places like Bakersfield and showing up on scene before police and getting better coverage than you would see on fox News. They showed up to a stabbing at a park and guy was being treated by ems. They showed up at a car flying off the freeway looked like the driver ejected. There was a police chase on the freeway they also got a shot of. I'm was thinking they could easily edit and upload to sell to a news station more LA based and probably make money that way. They didn't care about the money though. Even though they have subscribers and donations as well so that's cool. I would be interested to get a nice Sony camera. I'd call Sony and ask what is the best and buy it . I'd spend thousands of dollars to get s nice camera and radio setup with a laptop and wifi. I want to give the best coverage I can. We have alot that goes on during the summer months out here that only ends up in the newspaper. I don't buy a newspaper.

Are you able to send me a link? I can't find this page.

Would it be easier to just look at this live channel list and it would show me what is available? There's really nothing beyond this list is there?
Why not just use a laptop and this radio list?

Would it be Normal to contact the department and ask permission as a news source?
Your newspaper must request from the LVMPD what they can do to get to listen to real time police calls. I have no idea how LVMPD does that but my old dept made legitimate news folks buy their own radio (same make and model as the PD used) and then the PD's radio engineers would program them for the news. Quite expensive and the head of the local news station/paper had to get written permission first and sign an agreement where they could not release verbatim transcripts or bits of conversations

So the SdS 200 is the best you're going to do on a consumer scanner. It's a steep learning curve but there are people here willing to give their time and effort to teach you.

There is much to learn. If the area that you're in is encrypted for spot news you might consider, considering that you want a career or money making side gig, spending your time monitoring in an area that's not encrypted.

You just posted tonight after joining, let the thread pan out. You already have me and several experienced members responding and I have a feeling, because of the way you're handling your thread you will get many more.

I know this is hard to understand but a plane could crash in my neighborhood in the early morning and I would roll over and go back to sleep LOL.. I could care less. When you get to that point, you know you're retired. I'd watch it on TV later with video from guys like you.

you have listed Las Vegas(Clark county Nevada) and Mohave county(Arizona) what is it exactly that you are trying to listen to ?
Bullhead city AZ , Lake Havasu , Mohave County area and Needles to Barstow To Blythe. I get alot of stations on the scanner app on my phone? Is the sds 100 or 200 capable of more than what scanner apps provide for listening? Can I listen to multiple channels at once with the uniden?

That's funny and thank you. I don't think bullhead city and lake havasu is encrypted. It doesn't look like Henderson nv is either. How do these scanner apps on my phone compare to the sds200? In general terms?

Streamed scanner apps all come from Radio Reference unpaid volunteers with an agreement with radio reference whatever that might be monetarily. Some apps are better than others but if it's not streamed by a volunteer, you don't hear it, often there is a delay in real time broadcast between what you hear, not a big deal unless you're a spot news reporter.

You might be responding to a spot news call while the fire engines are backing into the station a long time after the call was.. recalled.🤣

That's a great reason to get my own radio.

usually (rule of thumb) you can listen to stuff up to 10 miles away and could go up to 20.
what you get on the phone is someone using a computer where they are to listen and put down the line stuff in their area.
