People living within a three-mile radius of a tractor-trailer accident in northeast Colorado were evacuated Wednesday after authorities learned the vehicle was carrying a corrosive material.
The tandem trailers toppled on Interstate 76 near Brush at about 5:15 a.m., blocking westbound lanes.
State Trooper Eric Wynn said a precautionary evacuation was ordered after a hazardous materials team determined what the truck was carrying.
Wynn described the evacuated area as mostly wide open space with few homes. He did not know how many people had to leave.
The identity of the substance was not immediately available, and it was not known how much if any of the material had leaked out.
The truck driver was extricated and airlifted to a hospital with unknown injuries.
