what does the coax shield do on my yagi? It is my understanding it has to be connected but I am just curious as to what it actually does

Many things.

It turns the center wire from just a wire into a transmission line.

It provides both a DC and RF ground reference for the signal on transmission line.

It creates a faraday shield to prevent external signals from being received by the center conductor.

The rest takes most of semester class on waves, fields, and transmission lines.

you mention transmition several times. I am using the Yagi (or any antenna right now) for Rx only so do I still need the shield? I removed the shield on an antenna I built and did not see or hear any noticable diference, but I did not know if it would cause damage or something like that.
