I'm looking at buying a new GRE PSR-600 as soon as they come out. As I live in Canada. I would like to hear about some people experience with buy such a device from the US. Things like shipping, duties and overall feel for the company you bought it from.

Places I'm thinking about (hope this is not going break any site policy)
Scanner Master
Universal Radio
Grove

As they all have the same price it’s more on getting it to me and crossing the boarder with ease.

Let me know if you have any other suggested places

why not buy from radioworld in toronto??

dont use UPS for shipping their duties are extremely high..you will pay GST PST on your purchase but ups has an astronomical processing fee

Thanks for the point about UPS

I would use radioworld but they don't carry the GRE scanners and talking to GRE they have no near plans to sell to any Canadian dealers at this time.

If you do use UPS, check into their higher priced rates.

I think Expedited shipping includes the brokerage fees so you know up front what you'll be paying (except the taxes).

With Expedited, you end up paying about the same as standard shipping once you factor in the brokerage and your scanner arrives in 1 - 2 days.

Don't let anybody tell you that you'll be paying duty. There is no duty on scanners.

You will pay brokerage and taxes only.

I've dealt with Scanner Master and Grove Enterprises and would recommend both.

Yes Mike but the difference is with UPS, you pay a $45 brokerage fee where as with Canada Post you pay $6... Big difference....

I said "if you do use UPS" use Expedited as you pay the brokerage fee up front and you get your scanner in a day or two.

I agree, it's a big difference from USPS but many US stores will not use USPS due to the hassles they have getting the package into the system.

I think we've gone over this before in other threads. It's much easier to use UPS online shipping and pickup then to drag the scanner to the store, stand in line and ship with USPS.

Mike, they don't have to go anywhere to use USPS.

The US Postal Service DOES have an online shipping service. It's called Click-N-Ship! http://www.usps.com/clicknship/faqs.htm
https://sss-web.usps.com/cns/landing.do

It provides:
-Discounted shipping rates over the physical post office. (for example: 2lb item like the OP said, sent to Canada via Express Mail International is $23 online, versus the post office price of $25)
-Free shipping supplies if you need them.
-Batch order capability
-They can also pickup the outgoing package, so you don't gotta go anywhere. (http://www.usps.com/pickup/welcome.htm)
-And they can provide tracking information to the customer.

So you don't HAVE to wait around in line to send something out.

I don't see it being any different than UPS.
Except for the massive choke hold they have on American companies on-line.
Most places don't use anything BUT UPS, and that's crummy ;-/

Well... I have bought every scanner that I own from the US. I find that if you ship them via UPS Expedited, you will not pay brokerage, but you will end up with GST and PST; shouldn't be any duty though. FYI, if you are able to have things shipped under a company name, you won't pay PST either.

The thing that really bugs me about UPS is that they will deliver your package with no charges, and you will get an invoice in the mail weeks later. I have had several arguments with them about that.

But in my opinion, definitely buy from the United States. On the other hand, RadioWorld & Durham Radio have all lowered their prices somewhat to match the currency.

No for both of them. I emailed them a few weeks ago. RW said no and Durham said they would email me back to confirm, but haven't heard from them. You would think they would since they are the only ones for radios up here. Hopefully in the new year they might change their minds. Best bet for the GREs is to use US retailers.

If you continue to read you'll see that the service is not available in all locations.

All I can say is the dealer told me they must physically travel to the Post Office to ship my package. Due to the wait times, they would not do it unless I paid an extra fee.

Perhaps they're lying or perhaps they're not. Since you're not there, you really can't comment.

Back when I worked in Mississauga (Streetsville), we had to physically visit the Post Office to pick up packages all the time since they wouldn't deliver to us. When they closed our suboffice down, we had to go to the local mall and stand in line at the Hallmark store.

Hi, go with USPS if possible! But if you have no choice to order with UPS, asked UPS not to deliver the package to your home. Instead, go at their warehouse... ask for the papers and bring them to a Canandian Border Services Agency. Here where I live, the agency is located in the Revenue Canada office. You probably have to argue a bit with UPS to get those papers but they cannot refuse.

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/do-rb/map-carte/map-carte-eng.html

You will only pay the taxes (no custom fees if product is made in USA) and they will stamp the papers... bring the papers back to UPS and UPS will have to give you the package without the $45 brokerage fee. UPS are charging fees that are free if you can bring the papers to a CBSA office.

Confirm with CBSA prior to ordering...

Shipping to Canada made easy.

I bought my PSR-500 through the Hamstation for $499.00 USD plus $30 for shipping. I had it shipped USPS Expedited with tracking number. It took about 4 days and cost me $8.00 CAD for handling and then of course PST and GST. The Hamstation has a regular US mail pick up for no added cost. The Hamstation is a authorized GRE seller too.
