Im looking into getting this radio. I live in nyc in an APT, so I wont be able to use any 100 foot wire running up to the roof for reception. Im looking into a shortwave radio to monitor military , uscg, etc ,,,this other than broadcast radio stations? Will it be possible with this radio? I always hear of a list of Freq to hear foreign news, music etc but isnt there anything else to listen to on a shortwave? Would this radio be a good buy?

I had a Icom 75 Radio for a year and loved it, I was only interested in Utility Frequencies and the radio worked great, you don't have to put the long wire antenna outside I had mine inside my apartment and it work ok, and there are other inside antenna's you can use. Make sure you get the UT-106 DSP UNIT this comes in real handy picking out the frequencies with noise on them.

Certainly an outdoor antenna is far and away preferable to an indoor one - but if there's no other way...we have a few designs in our HF Antennas wiki that should interest you. You didn't mention whether you had access to an attic or crawlspace, but if you do, the PAR EF SWL antenna is a real possibility. If you're somewhat handy with tools, and know your way around a soldering iron, the Carpet Loop is a possibility as well. Those are just 2 - there certainly are others out there....be sure to ask your questions on the Antennas forum. 73s Mike
