I have a Pro 106. Weird thing I guess. My signal meter bar is not showing at all any more now, but the good thing is I am receiving everthing just fine perfectly clear. Any ideas why it isn't showing the signal strength? The S is there just no bars.

A search of the 106 manual indicates there is no option to turn this on or off Does the "S" show up on the display?

I'm guessing that it might be that those particular transmissions are not strong enough to indicate a signal strength on the meter , but I'm just making an educated guess. I have a Pro 106 and the PSR 500.

Yes the S is there.

If you are just talking about the S that is right you cant turn that part off.

You can turn off the global on just by pressing FUNC/ATT that should indicate the G for global Then you can just press ATT then then you will have GA. Too take away the GA just press FUNC/ATT. or to turn off the Global ATT press program then press global and scroll down to Global Atten and there you can turn it off completely by just movingthe right or left arrow key to off if you want and just hit the save button.

I have a 106 and have no problems with the signal strength meter showing. This sounds very strange. As long as it is still working, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Did you upgrade the firmware recently? If so, try resetting the scanner and re-uploading your programming from your software. Just a thought.

You are speaking of the USB cable, part #-20-047? The CD just has drivers for the cable on it. Did you buy the scanner new? If so, and it is under 30 days, you may want to exchange it for another unit. I've had my 106 for over a year and a half, and never had the bars go unless it was a really weak signal.

Well guys follow up to my signal meter is strangely working again. I think the scanner gods are missing with me. Why all of sudden is my signal meter bars showing up again which I'm glad. But as I stated before even when the signal bars werent there it still came in just fine.

It was weird. I plugged in my speakers from my computer into it and it started working like that. I turned off and on a few times signal bars still working properly.I have all five bars showing. Unplugged the speakers from my scanner also. Still showing the signal bar at 5 bars.

Go figure it just lost the bars again but still coming in nice and clear. I really don't want to take in but might have too.

Ok I think I've beat this post to death signal meter bars working again for the whole day so far. No need to post more of my ramblings for this.

S meter is programmable

Unlike the GRE analog scanners with an S meter (PRO-164, PSR-300, etc), the S meter in the digital scanners can be "programmed". In other words, you can program a point which each bar will turn on. If those values get overwritten, programmed to 0, or something like that; the S meter will not display anything. This function is separate from the scanner actually receiving anything.

I would be taking it back for exchange or warranty repair before you extended runs out because you just know its going to take more than one try sending it back to get it fixed.

RS repair centers actually quite good.

Actually, having just gone through warranty repair with RS, I found their repair center to be excellent, thorough, and very quick. Problems mostly come from the stores themselves but once at the center they fix it right, check the radio out from stem to stern, update the firmware if needed and tweak it, if not quite to factory specs. Mine continues to work better than new.

Ya I have a buddy who bought a 2004 way back when and it kept loosing audio, he is an electronics person and looked at it and said no way, he sent it back under warranty, well 6 weeks later it was back and doing the same thing, three times it went back and 3 times it came back doing the same thing. He went through it and re-soldered all the solder points on the board and it didn't cure it, I even went through it once and did the same thing and it still didn't work properly. I ended up with a parts 2004 and swapped out the board with the audio on it and its been fine ever since.
