I'm trying to build a simple internet radio station. The only need and the caveat is that it plays MP3 files. Really I only need it to loop one MP3 file continuously, so this should be a fairly simple ask. It doesn't need to be published anywhere, as it's only being used on a local network.

I started with Icecast and Ices, until I realized they dropped MP3 support. So I went to Ices v0.4, which is supposed to support MP3, but the documentation is very light and I can't get it to work.

This shouldn't be that difficult - so what would the experts recommend? I'm going to be running it on vmWare, so I can use Linux or Windows.

that is quite an old post. No need to do the build now. On a raspberry pi, it is simply sudo apt install darkice.

use VLC to loop your mp3, use pulseaudio to direct the output into darkice and thus on to your stream.
