Hello Utah members!
I'm going to be in the Salt Lake City area for the next two months or so and was looking for advice on what agencies to program into my radio. I'll be near SLC airport on the east side mostly, spending most of my days on the airport property. I'm not sure what municipalities are in that area and what systems they will be using. I'll be driving out from the east along I-70, then highway 6 north to SLC, so if you have any advice on Utah State Patrol TG's, or conventional comms. that would be helpful also.
Thanks guys!
Craig from Colorado

While in Salt Lake you will find ample listening if you listen to UCAN site 003 (Salt Lake County), UCAN site 002 (Davis County), and Salt Lake Public Safety (AC33) site 1. With those three sites in your scanner you will hear virtually every law enforcement, fire, and EMS agency in Salt Lake and Davis Counties from near the airport.

You should also look over the Salt Lake Airport Authority TRS in the RR Database as well and if there is something there you would like to listen to then add it. I listen to the Airport mostly because of the SLC FD station at the airport which is dispatched by the Airport Control Center for fire and EMS calls on airport property. The airport police TG is now carried on the Salt Lake Safety (AC33) system.

As far as I-70 and SR-6 is concerned, I think that you should wait for enosjones to notice this thread and he can advise for those areas since he lives just off SR-6 in the Price area and monitors the vicinity all the time.

Excellent! Thanks glajlu. Is that area immediately east of SLC airport Salt Lake City proper, or is it some other municipality?

The airport sits to the west of Salt Lake City's downtown area and on the NW corner of the most densely populated area of the county. I'm not sure where you will be staying while you are here but since you mentioned near the airport I A$$ U MEd that you would be in one of the hotels near the airport. From that vantage point you can get reception from the UCAN 002 site in Davis county which is to the north and east of the airport. UCAN site 003 actually has several simulcast transmitters which allows you to hear everything in Salt Lake County. That includes several incorporated cities in the county which are serviced by UCAN but have their own dispatchers and TGs. The Salt Lake City TRS is owned by Salt Lake City and is separate from UCAN. That also can be copied from the area around the airport.

Is there a specific area you are interested in? ...or a particular type of agency? I'm just shootin' from the hip in the dark from your parameters laid out in the first post. When you get right down to it, this is a vast area (radio-wise) and I guarantee you will not lack for something to listen to. It might not all be exciting, but it is continuous 24/7/365.

I'm located toward the west side of the valley and I can copy radio traffic along I-80 from near Wyoming to Nevada.

Are you at all familiar with the area? Do you need someone to tell you what cities are in SLC county? Narrow your parameters a bit and let me see what I can come up with.

BE WARNED: I can program and store 1000 individual TGs in each of my scanners and I have them, probably, 60% full. That is 600 individual TGs and not nearly all the ones that are available in this area.

Sorry for the long delay between responses. I am in SLC now, staying at the Candlewood Suites on West Temple. http://tinyurl.com/3y83lf
I've got UCAN running strong and the SLC Airport Auth and Salt Lake AC33 systems in and they are coming through loud and clear. So, knowing exactly where I am now, could you recommend what jurisdictions and agencies I should focus on for the area? I appreciate the help as I won't have a lot of time to research on my own until much later.
Thanks!

I'm not exactly sure I understand your request. You should be able to go to the RR Database for Utah - Trunked, and then pick and choose the TGs you would be interested in. Are you asking me to provide you a list of TGs to program in? ...because there is not enough time in one day for me to do that. I need you to be just a little more specific.

As far a cities to listen to, there is Salt Lake City PD & FD, airport security, and some airport fire on the AC33 system. The Airport TRS also has airport fire and backup channels for SLC PD & FD.

UCAN Site 3 has the Highway Patrol for both Salt Lake County and Utah County plus the Salt Lake County SO, South Salt Lake, West Valley City, West Jordan, South Jordan, and Draper cities.

UCAN Site 2 carries Davis County UHP, SO, North Salt Lake, Bountiful, Woods Cross, Layton, Centerville, Clinton, and Farmington. Davis SO does most of the dispatching for the cities and UHP in Davis County.

I'm trying to figure out if the hotel I'm at is in the city limits of Salt Lake City, and thus covered by SLCFD and SLCPD, or if I am in a suburb of SLC and thus, should be listening to that agency. That is my main drive here, who watches the area that I'm staying in so if I hear sirens going by, who would I want to listen to in order to find out what's going on.

You are inside the Salt Lake City limits. All the airport property is SLC property and on out past the 5600 West off ramp from I-80 (several miles to your west). If you get a chance you should maybe go touring.

SR-6 - I-70 Info

I'm sorry I didn't notice this post sooner, and I hope you will be coming back toward SR-6 and I-70 on your way back. If you do, Ford Ridge (UHP Carbon 155.655) (UCAN CC 866.3875) will cover you from Soldier Summit/Colton Through Price and onto SR-10 Til you get past Huntington (If Thats the way your going back). Then Cedar Mountain (UHP Emery 154.920) will cover most of the way from Huntington to Green River On I-70. Green River Has a new linked repeater tied in with Cedar Mountain on 151.2575 which should cover most of the dead spots Cedar Mt. doesn't cover. If you need more info on SO,PD or UDOT channels let me know.

I'd love to try and make it to a meeting. Just tell me when and where and if I can, I'll be there! Still haven't had much time to really sit down and listen to the radio, but I'm sure i'll have some more questions as I get some time. Thanks for the help so far guys!

We'd love to have you there too. Just keep track of the thread titled "Next Meeting" and that will give you most of the details. Right now it seems that Saturday the 16th is the tentative date. It will be solidified once we get the guy with the keys alerted.
