Just went to a few parks and here is what I noticed:

At Knotts they were using a mix of (Kenwood HTs?), and Motorola CP 200s. There were other unidentified Motorola HTs used. In the front gate area some workers were using FRS radios.

At Universal they were using mostly UHF Motorola CP 200s, Motorola XPR 6550 (Mototrbo) and other unidentified Motorola radios. There were some VHF cheap Motorola radios.

Disneyland was all IDEN phone radios. What are they exactly? The ones I saw last week had a yellow back and black front. They look rubberized.

Unfortunately I didn't get to monitor any of these coms since I didn't have the freqs on hand but I did get on the Disneyland and Knotts ham repeaters. The Knotts repeater is 10X stronger than the Disneyland repeater signal.

BTW Universal has very good coverage on it's repeater channels.

It's been a while since I used Nextel but I seem to recall there's a DirectTalk setup that allows you to hear any user (akin to 'carrier squelch') - Might be interesting listening if the park uses DirectTalk for anything. Anyone know?

Direct Talk is an Off-Network [Simplex] feature of Nextel.

Disney is On-Network, I was suprised originally how well my Nextel worked
during a behind the scenes tour, and with Disney using Nextel's it seemed logical they would add more on-site connections.

If you are referring to the Anaheim park, they have a huge DAS network installed by one of the national tower companies. It's a safe bet that Sprint has their iDEN network on it and it's open to all other carriers if they want to pay to connect to it. Dland has always been a pain for the carriers to cover and this was the solution. I'm sure that Orlando probably has the same setup.

Orlando is even wired underground for coverage.

Or should we say Ground Level as the Park is actually on the 2nd floor :)

So if one of those Disney handhelds were to make its way to say, New York, you'd still be able to monitor traffic?

Could be, they also might have it restricted to certain towers or state only, especially since much is on GROUP Direct Connect Codes vs individual
