New to the scene. Have both units programmed via RT Systems. Hitting same repeater and listening to conversations in OH (I am in TX). The Ft70's sound is way mo betta. I've heard praises on the sensitivity of the FT60 and bought it to MARS mod and use on GMRS as well as ham. Set RF Sq on the FT60 to 3 and 4 ... still a lot of crackle and noise. Both HTs are sporting the same Diamond SRH77CA.

Other settings that would make the FT60 sound a bit better or is it what it is? Thanks.

Ft70 is in AMS mode so I’d think the FM frequencies would be consistent, no?
Nah that has nothing to do with it. The fact is the FT-60R is an older radio design. The FT-70DR is much newer and has better design and likely better components. I actually owned both for a while (and later sold the FT-60R.) The FT-60R's squelch was way too sensitive for my taste. I bought the FT-70DR after hearing some audio clips from YouTube. Its VHF AIR reception (AM) is *really* good. General FM/NFM analog also sounds very good -- very close to a professional LMR portable.

I'm using the SRH519 antenna and it seems to work quite well. Very stealthy and probably indestructible.

I highly recommend the SSM-17A hand mic as it pairs with the FT-70DR perfectly. Audio is crisp and clear. Transmit audio is also very good per user reports. It's a smaller mic and not over-bearing like some others. Its PTT switch is perfect -- very clicky and not mushy.

FWIW, Fusion mode worked well with my FT-991A that I owned up until recently.
