• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I want to get an external speaker for my 396, but im not sure if i can *fix* the wire to hook right up to my headphone jack. I know at radio shack they have this huge cabnet with 8mm attachments and stuff, would that be the way to do it or does uniden already have someting like that out?

That is a Uniden ESP 20. I have one sitting on my desk that I use with my BCT15...works well and can be purchased for about $15 on eBay. Its a durable little speaker, sounds good.

edit: You might want to find a powered speaker to use with your 396t since its headphone jack wont really drive a external speaker very well.

I use this one in my vehicles...super loud if you need it to be. Well worth the money IMO. It's amplified so, like madnachos said, it will give you the extra volume that lacks in a regular speaker when plugged into a regular headphone jack.

Radio Shack has a cb/ham/scanner extension speaker # 21-549 for $20 bucks that works very well Has a narrow frequency range of 300-3000Hz and is acoustically designed to enhance voice quality so distant and weak signals are clearer and easier to hear. it come with the 3.5 ear jack and also mounting bracket sounds real good and i use it myself

I have a motorola speaker that I use in the car with my 396t I purchased it off ebay a few years ago already wired for headphone jack. I think it is more powerful than some of the RS speakers, but could be louder. I use that uniden speaker in the house with my bct8 which is nice and loud and better with the bct8 than the 396t.

I also use the Radio Shack amplified speaker. Actually I have several of them, and they work well.

Each speaker requires its own 12V supply to power the amplifier portion of the speaker. On some of mine, I've simply added a cigar lighter plug and use it that way. On some others, I've hard-wired them into my vehicle's electrical system.
