• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Recently acquired a Spectra A-4 50w that shows a Fail001 upon startup, anyone have any advise on what I should do or could point me in the direction of someone in Western NC that could program it for me. Thanks, Brent

FAIL 001 is a Synthesizer out of lock condition.

Spectra radios are great radios but they have a really bad problem with leaking capacitors on the circuit boards. Sometimes if the radio has leaky caps you will see this error. I own 3 spectras and 2 of them had this problem.

See here: http://www.batlabs.com/spectra.html

Also, took this from another website:

"As these radios get older, the electrolytic capacitors can become a problem. If the electrolytic capacitors on the control head boards, radio drawer command board or RF board leak, it will disrupt the operation of the radio. Any leakage will also eat through the printed circuit board traces if left there long enough. The more common problems are radios that will not power up, get stuck in SELF TEST or give a FAIL 001 error message. Electrolytic capacitors are not the only cause of these problems, but they are becoming a fairly common cause. Keep this in mind when trouble shooting these radios."

Anyone know if Moto will still fix a control head for you if you send it to them? Or is this out of date for them?

The caps are not too hard to replace, but you do need a knowledge and some experience with surface mount rework.

Thing is, if the caps have leaked out too much, irreversible damage may have occurred as the electrolyte will etch away the PCB traces. These are multi-layer boards, so fix them early or they'll never work right again.

Here's a more indepth article on the capacitor problem:

Yes they are fixable, shoot over to Batlabs and look up Wil he does them for a living and is very reasonable.

Also make sure you are getting power everywhere. Even with bad caps a spectra may work intermittently. They have to really be shot to give a fail 001 there is usually some prior flakiness.

You can open the control head and examine it with a magnifying glass, look for leaking and damaged traces.
