Our local County Agency just switched over to Starcom radios, is there a way to continue to monitor their freuqency, without spending $5000 on a starcom radio? I.E. is there any scanners, radios, etc. that are capable of monitoring Starcom transmissions.

ya
GRE PSR-500 hand held
GRE PSR-600 Base/Mobile

Radio shack Pro 96 Hand held GRE made
Radio Shack Pro 2096 Base/Mobile GRE made

Uniden BCD996T
Uniden BCD396T

personally i don't like Uniden

i have heard the radio shack radios sound better then the Unidens

but i would go with the GRE PSR radios (newest ones out)

they are all going for about 500.00 each

If the site in your area uses 700 MHz frequencies, then you will not want to buy a Pro96 or Pro2096. I've seen some talk (see this thread) where people are having trouble with the new GRE scanners, particularly on digital systems. A used Pro96 is certainly worthy of consideration. My own personal experience is that the Uniden 396 is handling P25 simulcast sites better than the Pro96 (at least with the MDICE TRS in Champaign County). I am used to the Uniden dynamic memory structure, so the 396 is in my eyes easier to use and program than the Pro96. The PSR-500 has the best features of any handheld on the market. The Pro96 has a "smoother", yet more "tinny" (like someone talking into a tin box) sound than the 396 which I say has a "pixelly" sound when you hold it right close to your ear.
