Got my PSR-500 about an hour ago. Been working at loading by hand. :(

I loaded York County (home turf) and it works great.

Loaded the Hampton STARS freqs, initial response is it working better with the 500 than either the 96 or 396.

Still got a bug or two to figure out. They are on the Official release page.

NO. Sorry about the shouting. I think that feature is a Uniden proprietary feature. :( Maybe later (I hope).

Yes, you need to program the table, but all the values are available on the radio (unlike the 96)

I am liking the LED. Got it set so important systems will light up. Now all I need to do is remember the color coding.

Keep it flowing Lynn, your reports are sounding good. Grove indicates their shipping will go out tomorrow.

You should be able to run in P25 Auto mode on STARS without an issue. It transmits the tables on the control channel.

Lynn, Does it mute encryption on the JC/YC/Wmbg system?

 Why? If GRE thought it important enough, wouldn't it already be in the scanner?

Looking at the display for the letters ENC is not intertainment. I'd prefer not scanning the offending encrypted ID then to have the scanner stop and hold on it anyway. If an agency has several talkgroups using encryption (intermittently or not), the only difference between hearing the annoyance or not would be the new annoyance -- looking at display to see the letters ENC or what ever is used. How bout 'GOTCHA' instead of 'ENC'? ;)

I think what you are suggesting is not entering the enc tgid's into the scan list?

In my opinion, thats not an option, some tg's are not dedicted to enc comms so you would want them in the scan list.

To each his own ;-)

Encryption

Are the agencies you want to listen to using the same NAC for clear and encrypted? Some agencies use different NACs and you could enable the NAC feature, but that would be more likely in a non-trunked system.

Page 58/59 Object Temp Lockout. Certainly beats stalling on 'ENC'. IMHO

Lynn,

Not trying to repeat the question..however:

In a side by side comparison with your BCD-396T, a conventional scanner on the legacy VSP VHF feqs, and the GRE PSR-500, is there a noticeable improvement in reception by the GRE on STARS? What percentage of complete VSP 5th Division transmissions do you hear on the PSR-500/BCD-396T as compared to the simulcast legacy VSP frequencies?

I know this is a difficult request. However, here's the reason. Since most talkgroups on the JC/YC/Wmbg system use random encryption (some more than others), I would probably use my 996T to monitor that system (mutes encryption and continues to scan). As we all know, the 996T and 396T are not very good with STARS. I am considering buying the GRE just to to monitor STARS. From a quantitative point (percentage of decoding STARS transmission) how much better does it work on STARS?

Sorry if this is a redundant question.

Lynn, did you have a PRO-96 before, and if so, how did the PSR500 compare in terms of clear audio? I always had problems with the PRO-96 while in the area, and very poor performance outside the area.

With the PSR500, I would get clear bits of Williamsburg as far away as Colonial Heights. It is also far superior to the PRO-96 in decoding the Petersburg P25 system.

STARS listeners - have you tried the multi-site 'roam' option for your TSYS object? If so, set your high and low thresholds to about 45 and 60 respectively. It should produce better performance than the defaults. Oh, and please let us know if you find even better values as you tweak the radio around. Another STARS help...I believe that the TSYS channel# of the control channel will be displayed anytime you're receiving the system in manual mode. It's not as easy as alpha-tagging them in the PRO-96, but it's still a one-keystroke way to ID which transmitter site you're listening to.

Can someone contact me via PM to help me set up my P96 on STARS? I will be in Southern VA for about a month on business and would love to monitor them!

Thanks

Do you have to program in the STARS table (like the Pro-96)?
