RE: Revision of Earlier Press Release re: the Release of John Mark Karr
Pursuant to the decision by the District Attorney’s Office to request that the arrest warrant be quashed by the District Court this afternoon, Mr. John Mark Karr was released from the custody of the Sheriff’s Office.
Mr. Karr had been transported from the Boulder County Jail to the Justice Center by Sheriff’s deputies and was being detained pending his scheduled court appearance when the Sheriff’s Office was notified that no local charges would be filed. It was the Sheriff’s Office’ understanding that Sonoma County, California, authorities did not plan to assert a hold on their outstanding misdemeanor warrants. As part of the routine process of releasing prisoners, Mr. Karr was queried via the NCIC-CCIC computer system at 2:15 p.m.; there were no entries requesting his detainer.
Shortly after Mr. Karr’s release from custody at 2:55 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office was informed that the Sonoma County District Attorney did indeed plan to file charges against Mr. Karr on five counts of possessing child pornography and was willing to extradite him to California. A NCIC computer entry had been made at 2:41 p.m. by the California authorities, presumably prompted by media reports of Mr. Karr’s impending release.
Though released from the Sheriff’s custody, Mr. Karr was still in the company of investigators from the District Attorney’s Office when the Sheriff’s Office was notified of Sonoma County’s intentions. Mr. Karr was taken back into custody by Sheriff’s deputies shortly before 4:00 p.m. He will be held at the Boulder County Jail pending extradition.
The Sheriff’s Office apologizes for any confusion that our initial press release may have caused.
