Hi all,

Are there specific state police event channels that are used more often than others? I have some room left in my scanner to add a few and was hoping to get an idea of the more "popular" event channels, if that is a thing?

Thanks all.

If you're talking about the statewide event talkgroups (zones G, H, I, etc) those are assigned by the Network Communications Center (NCC) based on geographic location of the event. From a scanning perspective, it's almost random.

The Statewide Event Talkgoups G, H, J & K can be used by any type of agency and are in the clear. The Talkgroups in I and L are law enforcement only with have encryption capability. Agencies request one of these through the NCC for a specific duration. Unless one of these is active near you, there may not be much to hear. It will also be audible near you if a department near you is affiliating on it for some reason.

I have heard surveillance-type activity from several counties away being carried by sites in my area on those talkgroups. So you never know.
When an agency requests a talkgroup from NCC, there's a form that has to be filled out. There's a place on that form asking what geographic area you need covered. If you say that you need 6 counties, you'll have coverage in those 6 counties and probably all the adjacent counties as well.
