Those are not "repeater" sites. Those are tower sites for voice and/or data, but they are not all repeater sites. Only a very small fraction of the 80+ sites serve as repeaters, and that list is not all encompassing and is all ready out of date.

Stateboy - Just a clarification, please...

Even the sites that do have a "repeater" - are not used as a "repeater" (as such) because car to car traffic is not permitted except in certain emergency situations. Please verify that this is still the WSP policy. Thanks.

I don't know if there is a policy about not using talk around. I've personally never heard of that. I'm not saying there isn't though.

I most definately hear a lot of talkaround coming from the DeForest post units. In fact last night I heard a trooper get reminded by dispatch that he was on F1 when he was replying to someone else that he was chit chatting with. I could be wrong, but it seems very common to hear where I live.

If a car wants to call another car on F1 instead of direct, all they have to do is ask and 99.9% it's allowed unless there is a reason not to (sensitive info, emergency air etc).

With the advent of the mobile data system, that need has drastically decreased. Besides, with 110w radios and 5/8w antennas (most cars) they can talk to each on f2 at significant distances anyway.

There are places in the NE and NC regions where you can't hear the repeated traffic 100% because of the geographic size of the regions.

How does the trooper know what tower they keyed up on or which one to use?
Here in Washington county I hear them using Cascade, Lakeview, Delafield, and Mayville.

They don't. The system automatically indicates to the dispatcher which tower is recieveing the strongest signal and he/she uses that tower. Which is why you may occasionally hear more than 1 tower repeating mobiles. I have not noticed this to be happening that often in recent months.

I must say that since the deployment of the data system for D/L and Registration checks, the WSP channels have become much better to listen to for the scanner geek. I find the SE region patch on the Ozaukee system to be very informative with road conditions, pursuits, accidents, mutual aid calls, etc.. Being located in a bit of a convenient area for monitoring is also kinda nice as I can regularly hear 3, sometimes 4 districts from home.

Mike is close, but in reality it's not even that complicated. We know what towers cover what areas and use them appropriately. Case in point, we have 10 towers on our console here but only use 4 on a regular basis. The car calling a tower name on the radio is an old school holdover from the lowband days when there was a split mobile/base channel plan and that information mattered. These days, it is normally not required and a good dispatcher doesn't need that information anyway...they will know when a car is at _____ then they need to use ______ tower.

It's another play in the "because we did it this way 40 years ago" playbook :)
